3 Islands to visit in Thailand

Most people tend to head straight for Phuket, but these are better IMO!

... Read moreWhen I was planning my trip to Thailand, I kept seeing searches for 'elephant cafe Koh Samui,' and I wanted to share my personal take on this wonderful experience. While you won't find a traditional 'cafe' where elephants serve you coffee (and honestly, that's not what we want for these gentle giants!), Koh Samui offers something far more meaningful and ethical: incredible elephant sanctuaries. My visit to one of these sanctuaries was truly unforgettable, and it’s something I highly recommend for anyone wanting a respectful encounter with these magnificent creatures. I remember arriving early in the morning, buzzing with excitement. The sanctuary I chose focused heavily on conservation and rehabilitation, providing a safe haven for rescued elephants. We started our day by helping prepare their food – chopping up bananas and sugarcane. It was such a hands-on way to connect with the work they do. Seeing these massive, yet gentle, elephants up close and knowing their stories of rescue and rehabilitation was incredibly moving. We then had the opportunity to feed them by hand, which felt like such a privilege. It’s an intimate moment, feeling their trunks gently take the food from your palm. You can see the intelligence and calm in their eyes. One of the absolute highlights was walking with them through their natural habitat and then observing them during their mud bath. It wasn't a performance; it was just them, being elephants – rolling, splashing, and covering themselves in mud to protect their skin. The guides were passionate and shared so much about elephant behavior, conservation efforts, and the importance of ethical tourism. They explained why avoiding places that offer riding or show tricks is crucial for their welfare. If you’re looking for that 'elephant cafe' vibe, what you're truly hoping for is a close, personal, and ethical encounter – and that's precisely what a good sanctuary provides. It's a privilege to be in their presence, creating memories that last a lifetime, rather than just a quick, potentially harmful, photo op. Beyond the elephants, Koh Samui also offers unique experiences that connect you with nature and local culture. After my emotional elephant encounter, I loved exploring Fisherman's Village for authentic Thai food and crafts. The night market there is a feast for the senses! For those who love aquatic life, the neighboring island of Koh Tao is an absolute must for diving and snorkeling. I spent a day exploring Shark Bay and Ao Leuk, and the underwater world was simply breathtaking. Even on Koh Pha-ngan, away from the famous Full Moon Party, you can find tranquil spots for a relaxing beach massage or simply watch a stunning sunset from Amsterdam Bar, making each island a unique and unforgettable adventure.
