Experience Harry Potter magic in Edinburgh

Wandering through Edinburgh feels like stepping straight into a Harry Potter novel - misty skies, gothic towers, cobblestone streets - the city that inspired the wizarding world is truly magical.

J.K. Rowling lived in Edinburgh and a lot of her inspiration came from the city.  If you are a Potterhead, here are some must visit stops for your visit.

- Victoria Street - Colorful street in Edinburgh that Diagon Alley is based off of.  

- Museum Context - Harry Potter shop in the old town of Edinburgh.  You can shop or browse HP merchandise, but it also feels like you stepped into one of the shops from the books or movies.  The store is located on Victoria Street, there is usually a line to get in.  If you don’t feel like waiting in line, there is another shop on Cockburn Street that is less busy (although less immersive).  

- Greyfriars Kirkyard - One of the coolest and most haunted cemeteries in Scotland, J.K. Rowling was said to wander here whilst she was writing her books, taking inspiration for her characters from many of the names on the tombstones here.  The graveyard itself was also said to have inspired Godric’s Hollow.

- The Elephant House - Known as the birthplace of Harry Potter, where J.K. Rowling was known to sit and write her novels.  Although the cafe where she spent her time was badly damaged in a fire and currently closed, there is another location on Victoria Street.

Rowling found inspiration for character names in Greyfriars Kirkyard? It truly makes you wonder about all the intricate details that went into creating the wizarding world. For instance, characters like Alastor 'Mad-Eye' Moody, with his unique aliases and complex backstory, truly make the universe feel deep and intricate. Edinburgh's ancient, mysterious vibe absolutely feels like the perfect backdrop for such rich character development and hidden histories, making you feel like you could uncover a secret around every corner, much like a true Auror investigating a dark wizard! Speaking of secrets, don't just stick to the main attractions! While Victoria Street truly felt like stepping onto Diagon Alley with its vibrant shops and cobblestones, I also loved exploring Cockburn Street. It has this fantastic, winding feel, almost like a mini-Hogsmeade, perfect for those Instagram-worthy shots, especially with the colorful bunting overhead. It’s a bit less crowded than Victoria Street, offering a slightly more serene yet equally magical experience. And if you're like me and love a good photo op, keep an eye out for those iconic red British telephone booths scattered around the city – they make for the perfect 'calling the Ministry of Magic' moment, just like I did! Imagine stepping in there and feeling like you're about to be whisked away to a secret department. Inside Museum Context, it's not just a shop; it's an experience! I spent ages just browsing, and seeing all the detailed wands, like those of Nymphadora Tonks, Death Eaters, and even Lucius Malfoy, really made me feel like I was in Ollivanders. They even have a sorting hat! The attention to detail, from the Marauder's Map wallpaper to the antique-looking displays, is incredible. It’s far more immersive than just a regular souvenir store, making you feel like you've truly stepped into a magical emporium. For fellow Potterheads, I'd suggest dedicating at least a full day, if not two, to soaking it all in. Wear comfortable shoes – those cobblestones are charming but can be tough on your feet after a day of magical exploration! And don't forget to look up; the gothic architecture itself tells a story and truly evokes that mysterious, magical feel that Edinburgh is so famous for. You’ll spot gargoyles and intricate carvings that could easily belong in a scene from the books. Even without a wand, you'll feel completely enchanted. I'd definitely recommend popping into some of the smaller independent shops around Victoria Street too; you never know what unique magical treasures or artisan crafts you might find that could easily fit into a wizard's trunk. The whole city just breathes Harry Potter, and every visit feels like a new chapter in my own wizarding journey, connecting me deeper to the world I love!
