Magical Christmas town to add to your list
And it’s only 2 hours from Paris!
Colmar is the prettiest Christmas town you will ever see. The entire city is covered in Christmas from head to toe! Colmar has six Christmas markets, all located in the historic old town area, each with their own theme.
My tips:
🎄The Christmas markets get packed, so try to visit on a week day if possible for less crowds.
💰 Bring cash. Not a lot of vendors accept credit cards.
🚊 It can be quite expensive to book lodging in the Alsace region. We booked a hotel in Basel, Switzerland for half the price and the train to Colmar is only 40 minutes.
🎅🏼 Make sure to visit the markets during the day as well as at night time. There is so much detail to see before the sun goes down.

Colmar, often hailed as the most magical Christmas town in the world, truly lives up to its reputation, especially during the holiday season when the entire city is beautifully draped in festive decorations. What makes Colmar so special is not just the quantity but the quality of its six distinct Christmas markets, each offering unique themes and experiences, from traditional handicrafts to delicious Alsace specialties. A key highlight is the attention to detail in every corner—streets are lined with charming wooden chalets, dazzling lights, and festive greenery, creating an immersive atmosphere. Visitors love to stroll through both daytime and nighttime markets to fully appreciate the intricate decorations and lively ambiance. Since the markets tend to get crowded, planning weekdays for your visit can make for a more relaxed experience. One often overlooked tip for travelers is to bring cash, as many of the charming vendors do not accept credit cards. For lodging, the Alsace region can be pricey during Christmas time; an excellent budget-friendly option is to stay in Basel, Switzerland, which is only about 40 minutes away by train, offering both affordability and convenience. Besides the markets, Colmar itself is a picturesque town filled with colorful half-timbered houses, cobblestone streets, and scenic canals, making it perfect for photography enthusiasts and culture seekers alike during winter travel. Its proximity to Paris makes it an ideal day or overnight trip that captures the festive spirit of Europe without extended travel. Additionally, don't miss sampling local treats such as mulled wine, gingerbread, and regional charcuterie from vendors like Boucherie Charcuterie Vincent, whose quality meats are famous in the area. This adds an authentic taste of Alsace to your holiday experience. All in all, Colmar offers a comprehensive Christmas market adventure that combines festive charm, cultural richness, and practical travel tips, making it a must-add destination for any holiday travel list.
