That's not cotton@ Guess what is it?

Nope, that's not cotton — it's *kapok*.

What you're seeing falling from that tree is the seed fiber from a *Kapok tree* (_Ceiba pentandra_).

*How to tell:*

- *The tree*: The photos show a tall tree with a wide-spreading canopy, rough bark, and compound leaves. That's classic for Kapok trees. They're super common in parks in Singapore, Malaysia, and other tropical areas. The "LOOK" marking and path style in your 4th and 5th photos also look like Singapore's park connectors.

- *The fiber*: Kapok looks like fluffy cotton, but it's lighter, silkier, and more brittle. It comes from the seed pods of the tree. When the pods burst open, the white fluff carries the seeds away in the wind. That's the stuff stuck to the branches and in your hand.

- *The difference from cotton*: Real cotton grows on a low shrub (_Gossypium_), not a tall tree. Cotton fibers are attached to seeds and are used for textiles. Kapok fiber is too short and smooth to be spun, so it's used for stuffing pillows, life jackets, and mattresses.

*Heads up*: That fluff can be irritating to eyes and lungs if you get a lot of it in the air. The tiny red bug on your sample is a red cotton stainer bug — they often show up around kapok and cotton seeds, but they're harmless to humans.

So you're seeing a Kapok tree shedding its seeds. It happens every year, usually in the drier season.

... Read moreHaving encountered Kapok fibers firsthand during a visit to tropical parks in Southeast Asia, I can share some personal insights on this fascinating natural material. Kapok fibers are indeed visually similar to cotton but noticeably lighter and silkier, which makes them unique. When you touch the fluff, it feels extremely delicate and almost brittle compared to the softness and density of cotton. This difference arises because kapok fibers are hollow, providing excellent buoyancy and insulation qualities. In my experience exploring the park trails in Singapore, where Kapok trees line many walkways, you can often see seed pods bursting open in the dry season, releasing a cloud of white floss that glides softly in the breeze. This natural dispersal method is quite a sight and is a reminder of the tree's ecological role in tropical environments. I learned that kapok fiber has practical applications beyond its fluffy appearance. Unlike cotton fibers that are spun into textiles, kapok is predominantly used as stuffing in pillows, mattresses, upholstery, and life jackets because of its buoyant and water-resistant properties. This makes it a valuable sustainable alternative to synthetic stuffing materials. A caution from my personal encounter: inhaling large amounts of kapok fluff can irritate the eyes and respiratory tract, so it’s best to avoid prolonged exposure in windy conditions when the fibers are airborne. Also, spotting tiny red insects, often red cotton stainers, around kapok seed pods is common, but these bugs are harmless and do not pose any threat to humans. Overall, seeing kapok firsthand enriched my understanding of tropical flora and their diverse uses. If you get the chance to visit tropical parks with Kapok trees, I highly recommend observing this natural phenomenon—it's an interesting blend of botany and ecology right in the urban environment.
