Give This Up

... Read moreIt's amazing how often we hold onto things that don't serve us, sometimes without even realizing it. I've been on a journey to cultivate a healthier mindset, and one of the biggest revelations has been understanding what an 'unwholesome desire' truly means in my life. It's not always about grand vices; sometimes, it's those subtle cravings or habits that chip away at our peace. Take, for instance, the 'desire for control' – it sounds innocent enough, right? But I've learned that when this desire becomes unwholesome, it transforms into anxiety, constantly trying to manipulate outcomes, and forgetting that true peace often comes from surrendering what's beyond our reach. The Bible verse from Proverbs 3:5, 'Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding,' has been a lifeline for me in these moments. It's a reminder to release that grip and find freedom in faith. Then there's the more obvious, like 'gossiping' or engaging in 'unwholesome talk'. I've definitely been guilty of this in the past, thinking a little chat here or there was harmless. But reflecting on Ephesians 4:29, which says, 'Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths,' really hit home. It's about recognizing that our words have power, and if they're not building up, they're likely tearing down – not just others, but our own spirit too. I've found that actively choosing to step away from conversations that feel negative or critical has made a huge difference in my personal energy. 'Fear of change' is another big one I've grappled with. It often feels like a safe harbor, but in reality, it's an unwholesome desire to cling to the familiar, even when it's not serving our growth. Jeremiah 29:11 beautifully reminds us of God's plans for our future, plans to prosper us. Embracing change, even when scary, has opened doors I never imagined. It's a continuous process of trusting that good things are on the horizon. And who hasn't struggled with 'living in shame' or battling 'negative self-talk'? These are perhaps the most insidious unwholesome desires – the desire to believe we're not enough, or that our past defines us. Romans 8:1 offers such profound liberation: 'There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.' This verse, along with Psalm 139:14 ('I am fearfully and wonderfully made'), has become my shield against those inner voices. I've started consciously replacing negative thoughts with affirmations rooted in these truths. My personal journey has taught me that giving up these unwholesome desires isn't a one-time event; it's a daily practice of mindfulness and choosing what truly brings peace. It's about pausing before speaking, reflecting before reacting, and consciously aligning my thoughts with what is good and life-giving. If you're looking to cultivate a healthier mindset, I encourage you to reflect on these five areas. What are you holding onto that might be an 'unwholesome desire' in disguise? Letting go truly opens the door to a more joyful and peaceful existence.
