Different types of network routing

In my experience working with various network infrastructures, understanding these routing types deeply enhances both troubleshooting and network design. Shortest path routing is commonly used because it quickly directs data packets along the route with the lowest cost, which usually means the fewest hops or lowest latency. Strict source routing, where the sender specifies the complete path the packet must traverse, offers granular control, especially useful in environments needing specific routing policies or security compliance. However, it’s less flexible in dynamic networks due to its rigid path requirements. Equal-Cost Multi-Path (ECMP) routing stands out for its efficiency in traffic distribution across multiple paths with equal cost. This balances the network load well and can prevent congestion on any single pathway, which I’ve found invaluable in high-traffic data center settings. Segment Routing, a newer paradigm, enables the sender to define a sequence of nodes or waypoints packets must traverse, combining aspects of source routing and traffic engineering. It provides a scalable and programmable way to control traffic flows without complex signaling protocols. I’ve implemented segment routing in cloud networks where explicit path control and traffic engineering are critical for performance and reliability. These routing types each have strengths suited to particular network goals: shortest path for simplicity and speed, strict source for precision, ECMP for balancing, and segment routing for sophisticated traffic management. Combining this knowledge with practical use cases improves network efficiency and resilience significantly.
