Beginner Sewing Project: DIY Potholders

I’m still a beginner at sewing, but I really wanted to start using up old clothes and scrap fabric instead of letting it go to waste. So I made a few potholders for my kitchen!

The first one is a little quilt-style with a handmade pink butterfly (and yes… it ended up upside down 😅). The other two are simple patchwork designs just to practice.

They’re definitely not perfect, but they work—and I’m learning as I go. Trying to focus more on progress over perfection and just keep creating with what I have.

... Read moreStarting out with sewing projects can feel intimidating, but making potholders is one of the best ways to build your skills while creating something practical. Using scrap fabric and old clothes not only helps reduce waste but also adds unique character to each potholder. When I first began, I made my potholders by experimenting with quilt-style patchwork, which allowed me to practice stitching and assembling different fabric pieces. It’s normal for the first few attempts to have imperfections, like my handmade butterfly ending up upside down! As a beginner, focusing on progress rather than perfection is crucial. I found that using a sewing machine designed for home use, such as the JANOME New Home 2212, made the process smoother and less frustrating. This model is reliable for straightforward projects and great for learning basic stitches. When working with scrap fabrics, consider layering cotton fabrics with insulating batting to ensure your potholders provide enough heat protection. Patchwork designs can be as simple or as intricate as you feel comfortable with, and each potholder becomes a creative way to repurpose fabric scraps that might otherwise go unused. Also, embrace mistakes as part of the learning journey. Every stitch teaches you about fabric handling, machine tension, and seam allowances. With repeated practice, your projects will improve and inspire you to take on more ambitious sewing crafts. Joining online communities tagged with #beginnersewing and #upcycle can also provide support and fresh ideas. Ultimately, creating DIY potholders helped me realize that sewing is not about flawless results but about enjoying the process of making something useful and uniquely mine with recycled materials.
