Creating fan art for beloved characters like Kris from Deltarune is always such a joy, and this piece was particularly special to me. I wanted to explore the idea of Kris's journey and choices, which is why I depicted two distinct versions, each grappling with their identity and path. When I started sketching, I was really inspired by the idea of contrasting their light world appearance with a more determined, perhaps darker, alter ego, hinting at the difficult decisions they face. My artistic process for this Deltarune fan art began with those powerful lines from the game: "Do I look... like them?" I wanted to visualize that internal conflict. On one side, I drew Kris in their iconic yellow shirt, holding a knife and a pink heart – representing their innocence, or perhaps the player's initial interactions. The pink heart, for me, symbolizes their initial, more vulnerable state. Then, I contrasted this with a version of Kris in a blue shirt, wielding a sword, with a red heart prominently displayed. This symbolized a more assertive, determined Kris, ready to face the challenges of the Dark World. The red heart represents courage and determination, or even the player's soul guiding them. The entangled red and green strings that bind both versions of Kris were a crucial element I wanted to include. They symbolize the strings of fate, the choices imposed upon them, or even the player's control. It’s a visual metaphor for being pulled in different directions, a core theme in Deltarune. I spent a lot of time on the details, from the subtle differences in their expressions to the intricate weaving of the strings, trying to convey that sense of internal struggle and external influence. Capturing their unique red eyes in both forms was also important to maintain that coreKris essence. Kris is such a rich character with so many layers, from their stoic demeanor to their moments of defiance. Think about what aspects of their personality or story you want to highlight. Don't be afraid to experiment with different interpretations, just like I did with the knife versus sword, or the yellow versus blue shirt.
