Welcome to intramuros #philipphines

Manila

... Read moreHey everyone! I just had the most incredible time exploring Intramuros, Manila – the historic walled city right in the heart of the Philippines' capital! If you're into history, culture, and stunning old-world charm, you absolutely have to add this to your travel list. I was so excited to finally visit this iconic spot, and it truly exceeded all my expectations. So, what exactly is Intramuros? It's often called the 'Walled City' because it's literally surrounded by thick, old walls built by the Spanish during their colonial rule. The name 'Intramuros' itself comes from the Latin words 'intra,' meaning 'within,' and 'muros,' meaning 'walls' – pretty fitting, right? It was the center of Spanish political, religious, and military power for centuries. Walking through its cobbled streets, you can almost hear the echoes of the past. It’s absolutely packed with fascinating facts about Intramuros everywhere you look! What is Intramuros known for? Definitely its incredibly preserved Spanish colonial architecture and its deep historical significance. It served as the seat of government during the Spanish colonial period, and many pivotal moments in Philippine history unfolded within these walls. It’s a living museum, showcasing beautiful Baroque churches, grand houses, and ancient fortifications. Now, for the fun part – what to do in Intramuros! I spent a full day here and still feel like I could go back for more. Here are my top recommendations: Fort Santiago: This is a must-see! It's a citadel that was part of the original fortifications. You can explore the dungeons, walk along the walls, and visit the Rizal Shrine, which commemorates the national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. The views of the Pasig River from here are also lovely. San Agustin Church and Museum: A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the oldest stone church in the Philippines. The architecture is breathtaking, and the museum houses a vast collection of religious art and artifacts. It’s so peaceful inside. Casa Manila: This is a replica of a 19th-century colonial house, fully furnished to show what life was like for the wealthy during the Spanish era. It's a fantastic way to step back in time. Bambike Ecotours: I highly recommend renting a Bambike! These are handcrafted bamboo bicycles, and it’s an eco-friendly and super fun way to tour the city. The guides are really knowledgeable and share so many interesting stories. Kalesa Ride: For a more traditional experience, hop on a kalesa (horse-drawn carriage). It’s a bit touristy, but it adds to the old-world charm, especially if you want to cover ground quickly. Walk the Walls: Don't forget to literally walk along the top of the ancient walls! You get a unique perspective of the city and its surroundings. My personal tip: Wear comfy shoes because you'll be doing a lot of walking! Also, try to go early in the morning to avoid the heat and the biggest crowds. There are also lots of little cafes and eateries within Intramuros where you can grab a quick bite or a refreshing drink. I had some amazing local snacks! Overall, my trip to Intramuros, Manila was an unforgettable journey through time. It’s a place that truly immerses you in Philippine history and culture. I can’t wait to go back and discover even more hidden gems!
