“When we are frustrated, angry or unhappy…”

20 hours agoEdited to

... Read moreI’ve found that embracing the philosophy behind Epictetus’s quote, "When we are frustrated, angry or unhappy, never hold anyone except ourselves - that is, our judgments - accountable," can truly transform how we handle challenging emotions. Often, we instinctively blame others for our negative feelings, but this only prolongs the distress and keeps us stuck in frustration. By recognizing that our judgments shape our emotional responses, we gain the power to change our perspective. For example, when feeling angry about a situation, I remind myself it’s my interpretation of that event causing the anger, not the event itself. This awareness allows me to pause, reflect, and choose a calmer, more constructive mindset. Implementing this approach in daily life involves practicing mindfulness and self-reflection. Rather than reacting impulsively, I try to step back and ask: "Why am I feeling this way? Is there another way to see this?" This practice leads to greater emotional resilience and less reliance on external circumstances for our happiness. Over time, holding oneself accountable for emotions cultivates independence from others’ actions and opinions, empowering a healthier mental space. It’s a journey, but adopting Epictetus’s wisdom encourages personal growth, motivation, and a wiser mindset, as evidenced by the positive shifts I’ve experienced.
