🥺 Returning to Work After Maternity Leave

I’m starting work again tomorrow after over 4 months of maternity leave. Just wanted to share a few thoughts in case they help any of you as well!

💕 Establish and practice your new schedule. Ideas to include: chores, morning/nighttime routines, and meal plans. Make sure to incorporate time for those babies, your SO, and yourself!

💕 For pumping mamas: confirm with your employer a private area where you can pump other than a bathroom. In the US it is the law that you are given this space and given extra break time to do so.

💕 Give yourself grace. The transition can be hard balancing all of your responsibilities, and emotionally difficult being away from your little. It will take time to settle into a new routine. You don’t have to have everything figured out and perfected immediately.

Do any of you have advice for me too? I’m excited to go back but of course a little nervous!

... Read moreReturning to work after maternity leave can feel like stepping into a whole new world, even if it's the same office you left just months ago. I remember feeling a mix of excitement and anxiety, wondering how I'd juggle everything while still being the best mom I could be. It’s a journey, not a sprint, and I've learned a few things that might help you too. First off, establishing and practicing a schedule is crucial, as my personal experience showed. It’s not just about work hours; think about your whole day. I found success in doing a 'trial run' week before I officially went back. This meant getting up at the same time, practicing our morning routine, and even planning dinner. This helped iron out kinks with childcare drop-offs and made the first week back feel less chaotic. Consider batch cooking meals on the weekend or using a meal delivery service for the first few weeks – anything to lighten the load during those precious evening hours. Remember to schedule in time for yourself, even if it's just 15 minutes of quiet before everyone else wakes up; it makes a huge difference. For pumping mamas, knowing your rights is non-negotiable. I learned this the hard way, thinking I could just make do. But no! In the US, employers are legally required to provide a private, non-bathroom space to pump and reasonable break time to do so. Before you go back, have a conversation with your HR department. Confirm your pumping area (ideally, it's not a storage closet!) and discuss how your breaks will be managed. On a practical level, invest in a good portable pump and a cooler bag. Keep spare parts, milk storage bags, and even a hands-free pumping bra at work. Staying hydrated is key for maintaining your supply, so keep a water bottle close. Don't be afraid to advocate for yourself; your well-being and your baby's nutrition are paramount. Perhaps the most important advice I can offer, echoing the sentiment to 'Give yourself Grace,' is to be kind to yourself. The mom guilt can be overwhelming, making you question every decision. There will be days you feel like you're nailing it, and days you feel like you're failing on all fronts. That's normal. Remind yourself why you chose to return to work – whether it's for financial stability, career fulfillment, or personal growth. Communicate openly with your partner about sharing responsibilities, and don't hesitate to lean on your support system, be it friends, family, or other working parents. It takes time to find a new rhythm, and it's okay if that rhythm isn't perfect right away. Every small victory, like getting out the door on time or having a successful pumping session, is a win. You've got this, mama!

You’ll do great, mama! Just always allow yourself a break or two throughout the day. It can get overwhelming, but your family and all of us are rooting for you!

Maternity leave sucks in the states
I‘m an infant teacher. Today, a 6 weeks old baby was dropped off at daycare for the first time. Her mom was in tears, and I wanted to cry with her. This isn’t a choice in the states, parents are forced to leave their newborns after just 6 weeks because they can’t afford to skip work. Six weeks. Tha
