I'm not much of a holiday/christmas book girlie but I absolutely LOVED this book. I must mention that I also haven't read many romcoms either 😅 but that still didn't keep me from reading this gem. It was a fun time.
It's inspired by How the Grinch Stole Christmas with Christmas themed challenges in which the FMC, Storee, reluctantly becomes a contestant courtesy of her ailing Aunt when she and her sister come to visit.
Our MMC, Cole, is NOT happy she's in the competition. Why? Because his past won't let him be happy about. So what does he do? He enters the competition as well to spite her. It's basically his life goal to make sure she doesn't win.
Anyway, there's some lovely banter which is one of my favorite things to read in a book. Some spice that I have no complaints about. I'd highly recommend this book for the holidays!!
... Read moreAs someone who doesn't typically dive into holiday-themed books or even many rom-coms, finding a gem like 'How My Neighbor Stole Christmas' by Meghan Quinn was a delightful surprise. This book truly earned its five-star rating from me, and I'm excited to share why it became an instant favorite, perfect for anyone looking to add some sparkle to their festive reading.
What immediately grabbed my attention was the clever premise inspired by 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas.' Instead of a simple holiday romance, we get a unique competition with Christmas-themed challenges. This setup creates such a fantastic dynamic between our main characters, Storee and Cole. Storee, reluctantly participating, suddenly finds herself up against Cole, who seems determined to see her fail. This instant rivalry, fueled by a past he can't let go of, makes for an incredibly engaging enemies-to-lovers trope that keeps you turning pages. The tension and playful animosity between them were just *chef's kiss*.
And let's talk about the banter! For me, witty dialogue can make or break a rom-com, and this book absolutely delivers. Storee and Cole's exchanges are sharp, humorous, and genuinely entertaining, slowly chipping away at their initial dislike to reveal undeniable chemistry. It’s the kind of back-and-forth that feels real and makes you root for them, even when they’re trying to sabotage each other. Plus, the author doesn't shy away from adding a touch of 'spice' which perfectly complements the romance, adding an extra layer of heat without overshadowing the plot. It felt organic to their developing relationship, enhancing their connection rather than just being there for shock value.
Beyond the plot and characters, the overall atmosphere of this book is just magical. Picture yourself snuggled under a cozy plaid blanket, maybe a steaming mug of cocoa in hand, surrounded by twinkle lights and the scent of pine. That’s exactly the vibe this book conjures. It's like the perfect festive scene captured in a photograph – a Kindle resting beside candy canes, a Santa figurine, and wrapped gifts, just waiting to transport you. This book becomes part of your own holiday tradition, a delightful escape into a world brimming with Christmas spirit, even if the characters are initially a bit Grinchy.
For anyone on the hunt for a holiday read that’s more than just fluff, 'How My Neighbor Stole Christmas' is a must. It offers a fresh twist on classic themes, hilarious moments, heartfelt emotions, and a romance that slowly simmers to perfection. If you enjoy enemies-to-lovers, unique premises, and a healthy dose of holiday cheer mixed with a bit of steam, then Meghan Quinn’s latest is definitely one for your reading list. It’s the kind of book that leaves you with a warm, fuzzy feeling long after you've finished the last page, making it an unforgettable addition to any holiday season.
