aerial yoga!

Wellness habits: I just started really getting into aerial yoga, and I am in love! It has helped me so much mentally and physically!

... Read moreSince I started my aerial yoga journey, I've been absolutely amazed at how much it's transformed my well-being, both mentally and physically. If you're curious about trying it, let me share a bit more about what makes it so incredibly rewarding and some of my favorite beginner aerial hammock poses! First off, what even is aerial yoga? It's a unique practice that combines traditional yoga poses, Pilates, and dance with the support of a fabric hammock. This hammock isn't just a prop; it's your partner, helping you achieve deeper stretches, decompress your spine, and even experience inversions without putting pressure on your neck or back. I remember walking into my first studio setting, seeing those vibrant hammocks suspended from the ceiling, and feeling a mix of excitement and nerves. But trust me, the instructors are fantastic at guiding you through every step. The mental benefits I've experienced are profound. The focus required to balance and move gracefully in the air helps quiet my mind, reducing stress and anxiety. It’s a wonderful way to escape daily worries and truly be present in the moment. Physically, my core strength has improved dramatically, and I've gained incredible flexibility. The way the hammock supports you allows for stretches you might not achieve on the mat, leading to a feeling of elongation and release throughout your entire body. I've noticed a significant improvement in my posture, and my muscles feel stronger and more toned. Ready to try some aerial hammock poses? Here are a few that are perfect for beginners, like where I started: Cocoon (or Hammock Nap): This is often how a class begins or ends, and it's pure bliss. You simply sit in the hammock, pull the fabric up around you, and let it envelop your entire body. It feels incredibly secure and nurturing, like being gently hugged. It’s perfect for calming your nervous system and getting comfortable with the fabric's support. It’s also a great way to experience being fully suspended and letting go. Seated Hammock: From the cocoon, you can adjust to sit upright, with the fabric supporting your lower back and hips. This pose allows for gentle spinal twists and stretches while keeping your feet on the ground or extended. It's a lovely way to understand how the light blue fabric hammock can assist in opening up your hips and chest. Simple Inversion (Bat Pose): This is usually the first inversion you'll learn, and it's exhilarating! With the hammock supporting your hips, you lean back, let your head hang towards the floor, and allow your legs to spread wide, or keep them together. It provides incredible spinal decompression and gets the blood flowing to your brain. I was nervous my first time, but feeling the gentle pull and stretch was amazing. Just make sure your leggings are comfortable for this one! Standing Hammock Stretch: You can use the hammock for support while standing, allowing you to deepen lunges, side stretches, and hamstring stretches. The fabric provides stability, helping you reach further than you might on the mat. Before you go, a few tips for your first session: wear comfortable, close-fitting clothing (like leggings and a top that won't ride up), avoid zippers or sharp jewelry that could snag the fabric, and arrive hydrated. Don't be afraid to ask your instructor questions! Every studio setting is a bit different, but the focus on safety and fun is universal. Embracing aerial yoga has been one of the best wellness habits I've picked up. It's not just a workout; it's an experience that leaves me feeling stronger, more flexible, and incredibly happy. If you're looking for a new way to move and boost your mood, I highly recommend finding a studio nearby and giving aerial yoga a try. You might just fall in love with flying!
