The Perfect Child by Lucinda Berry

The Perfect Child by Lucinda Berry was so much more than a psychological thriller.

What I loved most about this book was how conflicted it made me feel. I found myself feeling deeply for both Hannah and Janie, even when their actions frustrated or unsettled me. Hannah is trying so hard to be the mother Janie needs, and my heart broke for her over and over again. But at the same time, Janie’s past is so tragic that I couldn’t help but feel compassion for her too. The entire book had me questioning myself. Is Janie a damaged child who desperately needs love and understanding? Or is Hannah seeing things that everyone else refuses to acknowledge? Every time I thought I had made up my mind, something would happen that made me second guess everything.

That’s what made this story so unsettling. There wasn’t a clear villain for me. Instead, I was stuck in this emotional tug of war, feeling sympathy for both sides while watching everything spiral out of control. This book kept me on edge, but it also made me think about trauma, motherhood, and how horrible postpartum experiences can become. This was a disturbing, emotional, and completely addictive read that stayed with me long after I finished! I completely recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #theperfectchild #bookreviews #thrillerbook #lucindaberry #bookrecommendations

... Read moreReading The Perfect Child by Lucinda Berry truly opened my eyes to the nuanced portrayal of trauma and motherhood rarely seen in psychological thrillers. The book’s unique approach in blurring the lines between victim and antagonist made me reflect deeply on how trauma can shape behavior and perceptions. As someone who has encountered stories about postpartum challenges, I found Hannah’s struggle to be authentically heartbreaking, capturing the complex emotions mothers often face but are hesitant to share. What stands out in this story is how the author avoids a simple black-and-white narrative. Instead, the emotional tug of war between Hannah and Janie felt so real that I often found myself sympathizing with both characters, even when they made questionable decisions. This duality made the reading experience emotionally intense and thought-provoking. It reminded me that people affected by trauma are multifaceted and that understanding their past is key to empathy. The depiction of Janie’s tragic past sheds light on how unaddressed childhood trauma can manifest in distressing behavior, affecting not just the individual but also those closest to them. Lucinda Berry’s storytelling encouraged me to consider the broader implications of how society treats trauma victims, especially children, and the importance of compassion and support. Moreover, the book’s exploration of postpartum experiences was particularly impactful. It highlighted how difficult and isolative these moments can be, often leading to misunderstandings even among family members. This aspect resonated with me personally and broadened my appreciation for stories that tackle mental health and emotional struggles within family dynamics. Overall, The Perfect Child is more than a thriller—it's a compelling conversation starter about love, pain, and the gray areas in human relationships. For readers looking for a psychological thriller that also offers profound emotional insight, this book is a highly recommended read.
