"When the devil takes over, there's nothing you can do."

This is my first official read with my @killerthrillercrew bookclub pals and I was STOKED when I looked over the synopsis. My favorite horror movie is Orphan, and this seemed like such a similar vibe that I couldn't wait to get started reading!!

Off the bat I loved how devoted to Janie's care and wellbeing both Christopher and Hannah were. Traumatized and abused children are one of the most vulnerable and sensitive populations out there, and having loving and supportive adults on their care team can be make or break in these situations. That being said, I couldn't shake this feeling that their blind desire to help her, especially Christopher's, was going to get them into serious danger.

As the story progressed, Christopher became one of my most hated book husbands due to his genuine lack of concern for his wife and her feelings- but neither Chris nor Hannah would win any awards for their parenting skills. I wanted to scream at them through my kindle screen during some of the choices they made with Janie! How could either of them be so blind?!

The housemaids wedding 2/5 ⭐️⭐️

Literally just another rushed boring book. It didn’t have anything good or exciting just felt like repetition.

A Familiar Stranger | A.R. Torre

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Wow wow wow!! I read a review that had me wanting to tip toe through this book but I just could not put it down! Talk about CRAZY and twisted.

"Such a quiet and ordinary wife and mother. Who will even notice what she's done?

Lillian Smith leads an unexceptional life, writing obituaries and killing time with her inattentive husband and disconnected son. Then she meets David, a handsome stranger, in a coffee shop. Lured into an affair, she invents a new persona, one without strings, deadlines, or brooding husbands.

Lillian has never felt so reckless, unpredictable, or wanted.

But as her affair with David intensifies, she withdraws from everything that's real, even her closest friend. When evidence of her life as a secret lover finds its way onto her son's social media, she risks ruining much more than her marriage or reputation.

As lies beget lies, Lillian's two worlds spiral dangerously out of control. And betrayals run deeper than she imagines.

Because Lillian isn't the only one leading a double life.

the doctors child

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Loved this, this was the end of this series and it was amazing! Like the rest in the series, the book is fast paced and will keep you on your toes. I saw where this one was heading pretty quickly but with the author, you never know what twist is around the corner. Alice and Fern are still as quirky as ever and how Fern's mind goes, she is a classic character to both love and hate. The daughters know very little of what happened and of each other so when they meet, there is bound to be some life altering moments.

And never get too attached to any character, because death has abound in this series. And I think this is the last book (but l've thought that before) so everyone is fair game. After four books, I am not sure I loved any of the characters, but I loved reading about them nonetheless. It's a little like a bad reality show that you just have to keep turning in to watch.

A Welcome Reunion by Lucinda Berry

⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is a short story sequel to The Perfect Child, following Janie, the troubled child from the original book out of juvenile detention, promoting her memoir and attempting to reunite with the Bauer family.

I really enjoyed The Perfect Child and was happy to read a follow up and find out what happens with this family. It could easily have been a full length novel but I was satisfied enough with a summary and having closure. While I question the plausibility of a couple of things, knowing the author's background as a psychologist specializing in trauma, l'm sure there are stranger realities out there than I can imagine. I did enjoy how it wrapped up.

The Last Party by A. R. Torre :

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A.R. Torre's latest thriller is a gripping page-turner that intertwines a chilling murder case with the carefully constructed life of an affluent mother, Perla Wultz. "The Last Party" delves into the secrets of the past, revealing how Perla's seemingly perfect life is shadowed by an obsession with a decades-old murder. Torre weaves suspense and intrigue as she explores the psyche of a woman who's hiding from her own truth while a notorious murderer, Leewood Folcrum, remains behind bars for a horrific crime he confessed to 23 years ago.

What sets this novel apart is its methodical unraveling of past and present. Torre expertly builds tension, keeping the reader on edge as both Perla's life and the investigation into Folcrum's crime come to a dangerous crossroads. The plot twists are sharp, and the questions of "who's deceiving who" make the book hard to put down.

The novel's strength lies in its multi-layered character development and the moral ambiguity of Perla, whose secrets unravel with every page. As new revelations come to light about the murder, the reader is left questioning whether the truth about the crime was ever fully uncovered. Torre does a brilliant job of keeping the suspense taut and the stakes high until the very last page.

Overall, "The Last Party" is a compelling mix of psychological suspense, mystery, and an exploration of how far people will go to protect their secrets. Perfect for fans of high-stakes thrillers and domestic suspense, it is a well-crafted narrative that will leave readers questioning everything they think they know.
