That 'harmless' snack just put 47 dogs in the ER..

There are things dogs should never be given — even if they seem harmless.

1️⃣ 𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞: Even a small amount can cause vomiting, seizures, and in severe cases, be fatal. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate are the most dangerous.

2️⃣ 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐬 & 𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐬: Some dogs tolerate them... others don’t. They can cause sudden kidney failure. The risk isn’t worth it.

3️⃣ 𝐗𝐲𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐥 (artificial sweetener): Found in sugar-free gum, candy, and peanut butter. It causes a rapid drop in blood sugar and liver failure.

4️⃣ 𝐎𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 & 𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐢𝐜: Even small amounts can damage red blood cells and cause anemia. This includes powdered forms in food.

5️⃣ 𝐌𝐚𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐚 𝐧𝐮𝐭𝐬: They cause weakness, vomiting, tremors, and hyperthermia in dogs. Symptoms can appear within 12 hours.

A lot of emergencies don’t start with something dramatic. They start with small mistakes we don’t think twice about.

And when your dog ingests something toxic, fast action matters.

That’s why I always keep 𝐏𝐚𝐰𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 activated charcoal on hand. It helps absorb toxins and can be crucial in those first critical moments while you’re getting to the vet. (Link in my bio or find it on Amazon)

No miracle claims. Just emergency preparedness.

... Read moreWhen it comes to keeping our furry friends safe, awareness of what human foods are toxic to dogs is crucial. From personal experience, I’ve seen how a simple, seemingly harmless treat can quickly turn into a veterinary emergency. Chocolate is widely known to be dangerous due to theobromine, which dogs metabolize slowly—this can cause symptoms ranging from vomiting and diarrhea to severe seizures and even death. However, grapes and raisins can be surprisingly treacherous, inducing acute kidney failure in some dogs unpredictably. I once had a friend whose dog was hospitalized after eating a small amount of raisin-containing bread; the vet emphasized that even a tiny amount can be harmful. One hidden danger is xylitol, an artificial sweetener in many sugar-free products like gum and peanut butter. Its ability to cause a rapid drop in blood sugar and liver toxicity means it’s essential to keep these items far out of reach. I always check ingredient lists now to avoid accidental poisonings. Onions and garlic, even in powdered form commonly used in many recipes, can damage a dog’s red blood cells leading to anemia. I’ve learned to be vigilant about sharing any homemade food with my dog. Macadamia nuts are another unsuspected hazard that can cause weakness, vomiting, tremors, and increased body temperature—symptoms that can appear within hours and require emergency care. The key takeaway is that emergencies often start with small mistakes we don’t realize. When you suspect your dog has ingested something toxic, fast action is vital. Having activated charcoal like Pawmergency on hand can help absorb toxins as you get your dog to the vet. This isn't a substitute for veterinary care but can be a critical step in the first few moments. Preparing for emergencies with such supplies can make a real difference. Above all, prevention is best—avoid giving dogs any food unless you are certain it is safe and consult your vet if in doubt. Sharing knowledge about these common but dangerous foods helps protect dogs from preventable emergencies and ensures they stay happy and healthy.
