Summertime in the Mountains
There are many ways I spend my summer, but my favorite way is in the Adirondack Mountains. Whether it is hiking, backpacking, camping, or a combination, I always enjoy the beauty and the peace of the woods.
Whatever I do I always make sure to have a plan, have all the necessities, and have a backup plan and emergency plan. You can never be too safe!
Our first of the 46 peaks we were NOT properly prepared. We set out on the 15 mile hike under the impression that it was 15 miles there and back… #alltrails had failed to mention that it was 15 miles there AND 15 miles back. Luckily we still packed a steady supply of “just in case” items. When we ran out of water we had filters and purification tablets. When the sun went down and it got cold we had flashlights and extra layers. After arriving at the peak at sunset we decided to take the main road back instead of the trail. We had all sorts of extra gear that helped us make it back to our car safely… a little after midnight… but if we had to stay the night we would have been SCREWED! Ever since then we always plan for backpacking and the possibility of staying overnight.

I’ve found that paddleboarding on the pristine waters of Blue Mountain Lake or Lake Placid offers a serene escape, letting you soak in the views from a different perspective. And for those who enjoy a quiet pastime, fishing in these clear waters is incredibly rewarding. If you're looking for something truly unique, consider an underground adventure! My 'cave exploring' trip to Howe Caverns was absolutely fascinating. It’s a wonderfully 'more accessible Cave exploring' experience, allowing you to witness incredible formations and even a '100 ft drop' safely from a boat ride. It’s a perfect activity, especially on a day when the mountain weather isn't cooperating. For those who love stunning vistas without the grueling climb, look for 'accessible Peak locations' like Whiteface Mountain. You can often drive much of the way up, enjoying panoramic views that are breathtaking for all ages and fitness levels. And speaking of making the most of your trip, 'Camping Anywhere!' truly speaks to the Adirondack spirit. Whether you prefer the amenities of a developed campground or the solitude of a primitive site, 'Planning your CAMPING TRIP' is key. Here are some 'essential tips' I've picked up: always research and make reservations, especially during peak summer months. Pack smart: layers, a reliable navigation system (even offline maps!), and water purification are non-negotiables – my own experience taught me that. And most importantly, embrace the Leave No Trace principles. Let's all do our part to keep this incredible wilderness wild. Places like Ausable Chasm and the charming town of Old Forge also offer fantastic day trips or bases for exploration. The Adirondacks truly have a piece of magic for everyone in the summer!
