That's the fun part for DMs to decide! For my campaign, I envision these 'space frogs' as ancient beings, perhaps survivors of a crashed celestial vessel that adapted to an aquatic environment. Their 'space' origin gives them unique psionic abilities or strange energy attacks, while their 'frog' nature makes them surprisingly agile both in water and on land (if they ever venture out). We've been having a blast imagining how they communicate – maybe through pulsating light patterns or low, guttural croaks that resonate through the water. Bringing 'under the sea' elements into D&D has been a game-changer for my group. It forces us to think differently about combat, movement, and exploration. Suddenly, grappling hooks become less useful, and water breathing spells are essential! I love how it opens up so many possibilities for unique puzzles and environmental hazards. My players had to figure out how to disable ancient pressure plates submerged in water while being chased by these curious Cyclops Space Frogs – talk about an adrenaline rush! If you're a Dungeon Master looking for fresh 'fantasy friends under the sea' ideas, I highly recommend stepping outside the traditional monster manual. Think about combining seemingly disparate concepts, just like my Space Frog. What strange origins could your underwater creatures have? Could they be guardians of forgotten treasures, or perhaps lost navigators from another dimension? The possibilities are endless, and your players will thank you for the unforgettable experiences. And don't let the 'cyclops' part fool you into thinking they're all hostile. My players actually managed to befriend one of these Space Frogs by offering it some strange, glowing fungi they found. Now, 'Skippy' (as they've affectionately named it) occasionally guides them through treacherous currents or helps them uncover hidden underwater passages. It’s given a whole new dynamic to our 'under the sea' adventures, making it feel truly like we're collecting unique 'fantasy friends' rather than just fighting monsters.
