Gospel for today according to Saint Luke

Luke 14:25-33

Great crowds were traveling with Jesus,

and he turned and addressed them,

"If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother,

wife and children, brothers and sisters,

and even his own life,

he cannot be my disciple.

Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me

cannot be my disciple.

Which of you wishing to construct a tower

does not first sit down and calculate the cost

to see if there is enough for its completion?

Otherwise, after laying the foundation

and finding himself unable to finish the work

the onlookers should laugh at him and say,

'This one began to build but did not have the resources to finish.'

Or what king marching into battle would not first sit down

and decide whether with ten thousand troops

he can successfully oppose another king

advancing upon him with twenty thousand troops?

But if not, while he is still far away,

he will send a delegation to ask for peace terms.

In the same way,

everyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions

cannot be my disciple."

... Read moreThe passage from Luke 14:25-33 serves as a powerful reminder of the deep commitment and sacrifice required to be a disciple of Jesus. It challenges believers to carefully evaluate the cost of discipleship—not merely as a casual decision but as a transformational life commitment. Jesus’ words urge us to prioritize our relationship with Him above all else, even above family ties and personal safety, symbolized by 'hating' one’s relatives and oneself in the context of total dedication. The metaphor of constructing a tower or a king preparing for battle emphasizes the importance of foresight and readiness. Just as a builder considers whether he has enough resources to complete the tower, and a king assesses his military strength before engaging in battle, so must a disciple understand the sacrifices needed to follow Christ fully. These include not only personal hardships but also the renouncement of material possessions and worldly attachments. In today’s world, where distractions and competing loyalties abound, this passage reminds us that authentic faith calls for courage and complete trust in God’s plan. Carrying one’s cross is a daily practice of self-denial, perseverance, and embracing God’s will even when it leads to trials or misunderstanding from others. Moreover, this scripture passage invites reflection on what it means to live a life of spiritual integrity and enduring faith. It encourages believers to cultivate a mindset of sacrificial love and unwavering commitment, trusting that the peace and joy offered by Jesus surpass all earthly concerns. In essence, Luke 14:25-33 is not only an invitation but also a call to action for Christians to examine their hearts and lives. Are we ready to count the cost and dedicate ourselves to following Jesus wholeheartedly? The passage challenges us to assess our spiritual resources and motivations, ensuring that our discipleship is marked by sincerity and total devotion. For those seeking to deepen their walk of faith, meditating on this passage can lead to a richer understanding of what it truly means to be a disciple—one who embraces sacrifice, lives with purpose, and embodies the Gospel message with passion and conviction.
