Gospel for today according to Saint Luke

Luke 10:25-37

There was a scholar of the law who stood up to test Jesus and said,

"Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"

Jesus said to him, "What is written in the law?

How do you read it?"

He said in reply,

"You shall love the Lord, your God,

with all your heart,

with all your being,

with all your strength,

and with all your mind,

and your neighbor as yourself."

He replied to him, "You have answered correctly;

do this and you will live."

But because he wished to justify himself, he said to Jesus,

"And who is my neighbor?"

Jesus replied,

"A man fell victim to robbers

as he went down from Jerusalem to Jericho.

They stripped and beat him and went off leaving him half-dead.

A priest happened to be going down that road,

but when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side.

Likewise a Levite came to the place,

and when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side.

But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him

was moved with compassion at the sight.

He approached the victim,

poured oil and wine over his wounds and bandaged them.

Then he lifted him up on his own animal,

took him to an inn, and cared for him.

The next day he took out two silver coins

and gave them to the innkeeper with the instruction,

'Take care of him.

If you spend more than what I have given you,

I shall repay you on my way back.'

Which of these three, in your opinion,

was neighbor to the robbers' victim?"

He answered, "The one who treated him with mercy."

Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."

... Read moreThe Parable of the Good Samaritan, found in Luke 10:25-37, stands as one of the most powerful teachings of Jesus on compassion, mercy, and the definition of a true neighbor. In this passage, a scholar of the law asks Jesus what must be done to inherit eternal life, prompting Jesus to emphasize the importance of loving God fully and loving one’s neighbor as oneself. This foundational command underscores the principle that loving God encompasses loving others with genuine care and kindness. In response to the scholar's follow-up question, "Who is my neighbor?", Jesus responds with a story about a man traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho who is attacked by robbers, left half-dead. Notably, a priest and a Levite, both respected figures in Jewish society, pass by without offering help. In contrast, a Samaritan—an individual despised and regarded as an outsider by Jews of that time—shows compassion by tending to the injured man, providing treatment with oil and wine, taking him to an inn, and even covering his expenses for further care. This parable challenges societal prejudices and emphasizes that true neighborly love is not determined by ethnicity, social status, or religious affiliation but by acts of mercy and compassion. The Samaritan’s example illustrates how genuine faith manifests in action, breaking down barriers and responding to human suffering without hesitation or discrimination. Applying the lessons of this parable in today’s context involves embracing inclusivity and reaching out to help those in need, regardless of background or difference. It encourages individuals and communities to act with kindness, empathy, and generosity, reflecting God's love in practical ways. Moreover, the story serves as a spiritual reminder that inheritance of eternal life is linked to how we live out the commandment to love our neighbors. It pushes believers to self-examination: Are we willing to go beyond societal norms to offer compassion and assistance? How do we treat "the other" in our lives? In modern spiritual practice, this passage inspires initiatives promoting social justice, humanitarian aid, and interfaith understanding. It is also a call to everyday acts of kindness—being attentive to suffering around us and responding with courage and love. In summary, Luke 10:25-37 offers a profound lesson that transcends religious texts, inviting all to consider mercy as the heart of ethical living. By embracing the spirit of the Good Samaritan, individuals can contribute to a more compassionate and just society, living out faith through meaningful action.
