... Read moreOh my goodness, fellow parents and Elf enthusiasts, I just have to share the latest Elf on the Shelf adventure that brought so much joy to our home! This year, our mischievous little friend, Nick the Elf, outdid himself with a brilliant candy cane hunt, and my kids absolutely adored it! If you're looking for an easy yet incredibly fun idea to surprise your little ones this Christmas season, this is it!
I remember scrambling for new Elf ideas last year, and I wished I'd thought of this sooner. It’s so simple to set up, but the excitement it generates is just priceless. Nick the Elf left a super cute note on an easel, just like in the picture, asking, 'Can you find all 12 Candy Canes?' It instantly turned into a little mystery game, and their eyes lit up with anticipation.
Why a Candy Cane Hunt is a Winner:
First off, candy canes are super festive and inexpensive. You can buy a box of 12 (or more!) for just a few dollars. Secondly, it gets the kids moving and exploring the house in a fun, scavenger-hunt style way. It’s not just a passive display; it’s an interactive adventure! Plus, it offers a sweet reward at the end. Who doesn't love finding a festive treat?
My Go-To Setup Tips & Hiding Spots:
For our hunt, I made sure Nick the Elf was positioned prominently, usually near the first clue or sitting amongst a pile of candy canes. Then, I scattered the 12 candy canes in various places. Here are some of my favorite hiding spots that always get a giggle:
Under sofa cushions: A classic!
Peeking out of a slipper or shoe: Hilarious for the kids to discover.
Tucked into a favorite book: Encourages a little reading!
Hanging on the Christmas tree: Blends right in with the decorations.
Inside a cereal box: A morning surprise!
Attached to a curtain rod: A bit trickier, but visible.
Behind a picture frame: A subtle hiding spot.
In a plant pot: Just make sure it’s clean!
Dangling from a light fixture: With a bit of string, it looks magical.
Next to their toothbrush: A fun bathroom surprise.
Inside a toy box: Hiding amongst their own treasures.
Under their pillow: A sweet dream discovery!
Making it Even More Magical (and a Little Challenging!):
If your kids are a bit older, you can add small clues with each candy cane, leading them to the next one, until they find all 12. Or, you could have the last candy cane lead to a special Christmas book or a small toy. One year, after they found all the candy canes, Nick the Elf left a tiny note congratulating them and suggesting they use the candy canes to decorate the tree or enjoy as a treat throughout the day. It really extends the fun!
Remember, the goal is to create a little bit of magic and wonder. Don't stress about making it perfect. The joy comes from the simple act of discovery and the festive spirit. This candy cane hunt idea is definitely going into our annual Elf on the Shelf rotation!
