For example, adopting a mindset like “This is my maximum safe load” helps me evaluate new tasks critically. I’ve found that not every request or task is essential or belongs on my plate. Saying “No” or delegating non-flight-critical tasks prevents unnecessary stress and keeps my focus sharp. One practical method I use is maintaining a mental or written status report of my current commitments, akin to a 'flight doctrine'—a set of personal rules that guide what I take on. This governance system moves beyond motivation by adjusting the entire workload system, ensuring balance and sustainability. This approach aligns with the idea that "If I add this, I remove something"—helping me keep a manageable workload and avoid the trap of overcommitment. It also protects me from burnout, which often affects high performers who feel compelled to carry too much weight. Ultimately, governance creates a framework where productivity thrives because the system supports steady, realistic progress rather than just pushing harder with willpower. Applying governance principles has transformed my work habits, leading to more consistent results and a healthier work-life balance.
