Responsibility Gauge: You might not be tired — you might be overloaded
Most people think burnout comes from doing too much.
That’s not always true.
Sometimes it comes from carrying too much for too long with no relief:
• bills
• pressure
• responsibility
• people depending on you
That’s not just effort.
That’s overload.
This is why I keep saying:
load governance matters more than balance.
Before you shame yourself for being tired, check the weight you’ve been carrying.
Check your instruments.

In my personal experience, recognizing the difference between being simply tired and feeling overloaded has been a game-changer. Often, I would push myself harder, assuming fatigue was due to working too many hours or doing too many tasks simultaneously. However, what truly wore me down was the continuous weight of responsibilities—like bills, expectations from others, and constant pressure—that lingered without sufficient breaks. This invisible burden can drain our mental and emotional energy more than physical activity alone. It's crucial to regularly assess your "Responsibility Gauge," a concept that measures not only what you do but how much you carry mentally and emotionally. For instance, caring for family members or managing financial stress often adds to the overload, even if the daily workload seems manageable. Practicing load governance means actively identifying which responsibilities you can delegate, postpone, or eliminate. Implementing this approach has helped me reduce burnout symptoms without necessarily cutting back on work hours. Instead, it’s about redistributing the mental load and being honest about the pressure you’re under. Checking your instruments—such as journaling your stress sources or using mindfulness techniques to become aware of your limits—can provide a clearer picture of your current load. This self-awareness helps shift the focus from trying to achieve perfect balance to managing what is sustainable. Finally, remember that feeling exhausted doesn’t always mean you lack effort; it may indicate you’ve been overloaded for too long. By tuning into your Responsibility Gauge and practicing load governance, you can better protect your well-being, boost productivity, and heal from chronic stress.
