Everybody With Highlights Isn’t Starter Material

Character is the bedrock that withstands pressure and challenges, while discipline ensures consistency and stability through ups and downs. Chemistry can spark excitement, but alignment with core values and goals sustains collaboration and trust in the long run. For example, in one team I worked with, a star player initially dazzled everyone with their exceptional skills, but without the right mindset and discipline, their performance was inconsistent. Another teammate, quieter at first, demonstrated strong character and reliability. Over time, this steady contributor became the cornerstone of the team's success because their foundation supported sustainable growth. This aligns with the saying, "Everybody with highlights isn’t starter material." Drafting or selecting based solely on what looks good first can lead to weak selection and ultimately, failure attributed wrongly to bad luck. Instead, focusing on qualities like emotional intelligence, leadership alignment, and relationship growth fosters healthy and stable teams or partnerships.
