You Left the Environment. But Did the Environment Leave You?

Leaving something unhealthy and unlearning what it taught you are not the same process.

You can finally have consistency and still expect disappointment.

Have support and still struggle to ask for help.

Experience peace and still scan for what’s about to go wrong.

Be able to speak honestly and still rehearse everything before saying it.

Because sometimes the environment changes before the adaptation does.

We celebrate leaving the crooked room.

But nobody tells you that you might reach a level floor and still stand like it’s tilted.

Not because the new environment isn’t healthier.

Because the old one taught you how to function.

Useful then doesn’t mean necessary now.

So instead of immediately asking:

“What’s wrong with me?”

Try:

“What did I learn to do here?”

Then go one layer deeper:

“Do I still need it where I am now?”

That’s where recalibration begins.

If this gave language to something you’ve experienced, save it and come back to the question.

And if you want the deeper layer, I unpacked what happens after you leave the crooked room in my latest Decoded essay:

You Learned How to Stand in a Crooked Room.

... Read moreLeaving an unhealthy environment can be a significant first step toward healing, but from my experience, it’s only part of the journey. Even after physically removing yourself from a negative space, the habits, thought patterns, and survival mechanisms you developed there can linger, shaping how you interact with your new surroundings. I’ve noticed that these learned responses often make it feel like the environment hasn’t actually changed—even when it clearly has. One personal realization was how I sometimes still scan for threats or rehearse what I want to say, despite being in safer spaces. This reminded me of the concept "WHEN SURVIVAL STARTS FEELING NORMAL," highlighting how survival behaviors can become so ingrained that they feel automatic or necessary, even if they no longer serve you. This process requires a conscious effort of recalibration. Asking yourself questions like, "What did I learn to do in my old environment?" and "Do I still need these behaviors now?" helps in recognizing which patterns are outdated and which are worth keeping. It’s a form of self-awareness that goes beyond just moving physically—it helps you rebuild your internal environment. One practice that helped me was journaling about my reactions and emotions in different settings and reflecting on whether they stemmed from past conditioning or present realities. This ongoing reflection helped me gradually loosen the hold of past traumas and open up to newer, healthier ways of relating. Remember, adaptation is a process, not a moment. Even after leaving a toxic place, it’s normal to feel out of sync or unsettled as you relearn how to stand in your new environment. This deeper work brings true freedom and peace, allowing you to respond to life from a place of growth rather than survival.

Why I Left The US
Moving to the UK wasn’t random for me. It was an answered prayer that had been building since October, honestly even before that. People don’t talk enough about the cycle of constant ambition, especially in the self-employed/entrepreneur space in the US. It’s not a bad thing, but it is a differe
