I've switched to using essential oils like citronella, lavender, or eucalyptus mixed with a carrier oil sprayed lightly around play areas. These scents are less offensive than chemical sprays and still effective at repelling bugs. Also, dressing kids in lightweight, long-sleeved clothing during peak mosquito hours helps. Balancing fun and comfort is tricky, but mixing tried-and-true outdoor games with creative indoor projects, along with gentle mosquito control, has helped keep my kids happy and me sane this summer.
