June bugs

2025/1/18 Edited to

... Read moreYou know those big, clumsy beetles that start buzzing around your porch lights right about now? Yep, I'm talking about June bugs! I've always been fascinated (and sometimes a little startled!) by them, so I decided to do a deep dive into these common summer insects. What is their deal, anyway? First off, what exactly is a June bug? They're actually a type of scarab beetle, usually reddish-brown and about half an inch to an inch long. You might know them by their scientific name, *Phyllophaga*, which means 'leaf-eater.' They're pretty easy to spot with their hard, shiny wing covers and that distinctive buzzing sound as they fly. And yes, to answer one common question, they absolutely do fly, though often in a rather haphazard way, often bumping into things! So, why do June bugs come out in June? Well, it's all about their life cycle. What we see flying around are the adult beetles. They spend most of their lives underground as C-shaped white grubs, feeding on plant roots. They can actually live as grubs for one to three years before pupating and emerging as adults, typically in late spring or early summer – hence the name 'June bug.' Once they emerge, their main goal is to mate and lay eggs, continuing the cycle. A lot of people wonder, 'What do June bugs do?' Primarily, the adults feed on the leaves of trees and shrubs at night. They're nocturnal, which is why you often see them attracted to your outdoor lights. Their grubs, on the other hand, are busy munching on grass roots, which can sometimes cause damage to lawns if there are too many of them. And what about their purpose? Are they just annoying summer visitors? Not at all! June bugs, both adults and grubs, play an important ecological role. They're a significant food source for many animals, including birds, raccoons, skunks, and even some predatory insects. The grubs also help aerate the soil as they tunnel around, although, as mentioned, heavy infestations can be problematic for gardeners. Where are June bugs found? You'll find these guys pretty much all across North America, especially in areas with lawns, gardens, and deciduous trees. They thrive in environments where their grubs have plenty of roots to feed on. You might also be asking, 'What happened to June bugs?' Sometimes it feels like there are more, sometimes fewer. Their populations can fluctuate quite a bit due to natural cycles, weather patterns, pesticides, and the presence of natural predators and diseases. So, if you've noticed fewer one year, it could just be a natural dip in their population cycle. There are also many different 'types' of June bugs, with over 200 species in North America alone, so what you see might vary slightly depending on your region. In my experience, June bugs are mostly harmless to humans. They don't bite or sting, though their clumsy flight might make them seem a bit menacing when they fly into you! Understanding their life cycle and purpose has definitely made me appreciate these buzzing summer regulars a bit more. They're just doing their part in the great big ecosystem!

4 Essential Oils I Use to Repel Bugs
We do pest control every 3 months, but lately I’ve still been seeing way more spiders than usual. So I decided to make a natural essential oil spray to help repel them. A while ago I also made the spray for gnats. I spray straight on the soil and also around the plants, and it helped a lot. T
