Tyre in the Past (750 BC)

At that time, Tyre was not part of the mainland but was built on a rocky island just off the coast. The city was surrounded by formidable walls, making it nearly impossible to attack from land. It was known as one of the greatest maritime trading centers and ports of its time.
The Phoenicians of Tyre were renowned seafarers. They traveled across the Mediterranean, establishing numerous colonies, such as Carthage in North Africa. Their trade flourished with valuable goods, including the prized Tyrian purple dye, a symbol of wealth and royalty, which they produced from sea snails.
Tyre Today (2024 AD)
The bottom image shows Tyre in 2024. You can see that the city's geography has completely changed. The small island has become a peninsula connected to the mainland—a result of the actions of the great warrior Alexander the Great in 332 BC.
When Alexander sought to conquer Tyre, but could not attack from the sea, he decided to build a massive "causeway" by filling the sea with the rubble of the old city and large stones. This allowed his army to march across and successfully breach the city's defenses. Over time, this causeway accumulated sand and silt, forming the land bridge that connects the island to the mainland, giving modern-day Tyre its distinctive peninsula shape.
Today, Tyre remains a vital port city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site that attracts tourists from all over. Ancient Roman ruins, such as the hippodrome and an amphitheater, stand as a testament to its glorious past, blending seamlessly with the vibrant life of this coastal city.
