This image shows a fascinating transformation of Philippi, one of Greece's most significant ancient cities, located in the northern part of the country.
Top image (200 BC): This is a rendering of Philippi during its prime. The city was built as a crucial fortress and was surrounded by a strong wall. The interior was densely packed with buildings, and the area was encircled by fertile agricultural land.
Bottom image (2023): This shows the city's ruins today, reflecting over 2,200 years of change. Although only ruins remain, the clear outline of the ancient city is still visible, including the Ancient Theatre and parts of the city wall that once stood proudly on the hill.
Philippi played a key role in various historical events, from being a major battlefield during the Roman era (the Battle of Philippi) to becoming a center for the early spread of Christianity. The apostle Paul visited and founded the first Christian community in Europe here.
