Guangzhou in 40 Years: The City Has Changed, But the Flavors Remain
🌸 1980s
Back then, the south of the Pearl River still looked like countryside, while the north was the “provincial city.”
The built-up area was only 68 km². Crossing the river meant queuing for boats.
Tianhe was still farmland, East Huanshi was the so-called “new urban district,” and Beijing Road carried the weight of the city’s commerce. Under the banyan trees at the Longdi embankment, old men shared their tales of yesterday.
🌆 1990s–2000s
The city began to rise. Tianhe was ready to boom, and the CITIC Tower pierced the clouds.
In 1997, the East Railway Station was completed → Tianhe City lit up the new central axis.
The Ninth National Games ignited the Olympic Sports Center, while the new Baiyun Airport took flight.
In 2004, the new TV Tower began construction → Liede Bridge connected the banks, and Zhujiang New Town was born.
🏙 2010s – Today
Nansha Free Trade Zone set sail. The Canton Tower lit up the skyline.
The 2010 Asian Games transformed the city → Zhujiang New Town finally became the “Wall Street of South China.”
By 2023, Guangzhou’s built-up area had reached nearly 2,000 km².
South Railway Station, Pazhou’s e-commerce hub, and the Greater Bay Area “one-hour living circle” made the city pulse with new speed.
But the Guangzhou in my heart will always be:
Grandma’s beef offal, Yinji rice noodle rolls, shrimp dumplings, and char siu buns in a teahouse cup 🍵
The Guangzhou in my ears is still:
The creak of Xiguan’s wooden sliding doors, the steamboat whistle on the Pearl River, and the herbal tea shop uncle calling out, “Hot-tempered? Have a cup of Bantang tea!”
