The 1980s: Old Qingdao Memories
* West was "Qingdao," East was "Dongzhen": The built-up area was less than 100 km², tightly huddled in one corner on the east bank of Jiaozhou Bay.
* Ferry Life: Going to the west coast (Huangdao) meant long waits for the ferry—a common occurrence!
* The Old Heart: Zhongshan Road held all the hustle and bustle. Zhanqiao Pier and Huilan Pavilion overlooked the crowds.
* City Limits: The area around the current City Government was all wheat fields, and Zhanshan was considered typical countryside.
The 1990s - 2000s: The Great Eastern Shift
* New City Foundation: Development of the east began! The City Government relocated eastward, laying the groundwork for a new city.
* New Landmarks: In 1997, Hong Kong Road opened. May Fourth Square became the new city symbol.
