Social power still works! Meta quickly decoded the latent "face scan" in Smart Glasses.
Social power still works! Meta quickly decoded the latent "face scan" in Smart Glasses within 24 hours. 🕶️🚫
After the WIRED news agency released insights that Meta had secretly embedded "facial recognition" technology into Meta AI applications for smart glasses with millions of users, the company recently released an update to remove virtually all traces of this system. 😲
The unreleased secret feature, called "NameTag," is designed to convert the faces captured by the glasses into biometric identity information, and to alert the wearer when the "system recognizes the person," 👤🔍 but as of now, both the facial database system, the notification system, and the folder to store stranger images that the identification system has not been removed into place. 🗑️
But this may not end easily... 🤔
Meta executives issued a barely immediate response, with Andrew Bosworth (CTO) stating that the news reports were "highly misleading" and "not straightforward."
However, Meta still refuses to answer several important questions, such as:
📂 Has a face profile database been created during the internal test?
⏱️ How long will the app keep strangers' personal information?
📡 Have those data ever been sent back to Meta's server?
Worryingly, the company has not yet confirmed that the NameTag project is dead or just waiting for the "favorable political situation" to be secretly reused. 🕵️♂️
Back in 2021, Meta shut down Facebook's face scanning system after a wave of privacy resistance, which led to the company paying to mediate a biomedical data breach of about $2 billion in Illinois and Texas. 💰
The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) warned that this event is a great testament: "We cannot leave our hope of protecting our digital rights to the goodwill of Big Tech." ⚠️
Even now the code has been deleted...But spy technology targets may still be around us. 👁️🗨️
