ð°ð· KF ïž 21 Boramae went from an experimental project to a real South Korean production fighter.
South Korea held its first production KF ïž 21 acceptance ceremony in March 2026 and prepares to be imported into service with the Air Force from September. It is considered a key pin of efforts to build a domestic combat aviation industry.
The KF ïž 21 Block I is a 4.5-era fighter aircraft designed to be more difficult to detect, with AESA radar, infrared detection system and modern data link system, but also externally armed, so it should not be called a full stealth aircraft like the F ïž 35.
The first version âïļ emphasized air-to-air combat missions. Before expanding the ground-attack capabilities in Block II, the internal weapons bay section and further Stelth improvements were also future development approaches, not the capabilities of the machines currently in production.
The figure of $65 million per ship, often mentioned as a target price or flyaway valuation from the development phase, is not yet a confirmed export price because the actual contract may include spare parts, weapons, training and lifetime support.
Meanwhile, South Korea has not officially announced its first KF ïž 21 export customer. Indonesia is a co-development partner and is discussing the supply of the machine, but so far no completion of the contract has been disclosed.
So Boramae's next test may not just be efficiency in the sky, but proof of whether South Korea can actually turn its own-developed fighter into a global export.
