Pentagon Accelerates Development of Drone-Missile Handed "Laser Weapon," Reduces Expensive Extraction Rocket Burden
The United States Department of Defense awarded Lockheed Martin Aculight and nLIGHT Defense an $86 million contract to develop the Joint Laser Weapon System (JLWS) for extracting swarmed drones and cruise missiles. The first-stage prototype will use a 150-kilowatt laser before planning to increase it to 300-500 kilowatts in the future. 🔥
This idea stems from the "cost imbalance" problem because drones costing thousands to tens of thousands of dollars could squeeze the defense to fire a multi-million dollar extraction rocket, while lasers can be re-fired as long as the system has enough power and cooling, making the cost per launch significantly lower than rockets.
However, the laser is not yet a weak weapon. Its effectiveness can be reduced when it comes to rain, fog, smoke, dust, or fast-moving, distant targets. The beam must catch a continuous target for some time to damage it, so it does not replace the Patriot system or all extraction rockets, but it acts as a "first stage," handles cheap threats, and stores expensive rockets to meet more dangerous targets.
This may be the beginning of a new air defense system that measures not only who shoots farther, but also who can shoot longer without running out of inventory.
