On July 7, 2026, the 11-nation NATO Alliance National Group announced the procurement of up to 10 Saab GlobalEyes as replacements for some of the Boeing E-3A AWACS aircraft, which are now 14 in service and have been in use since the 1980s.
The countries participating in the project are Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania and Sweden, with NATO continuing formal negotiations with Saab, thus not yet a signed contract has been completed.
The eye-catching point is that NATO previously announced plans to procure six Boeing E-7A Wedgetails in 2023, but this selection of GlobalEye reflects that the alliance's approach to aerial warning systems is changing significantly. However, it should not be called a "face-off" to the US because NATO also indicates that the project has parts and partnerships from American companies.
📡 GlobalEye uses the Erieye Extended Range radar and can monitor air, ground and sea simultaneously, including tracking drones, cruise missiles and curved trajectory missiles.
The body developed on Canada's Bombardier Global family of aircraft, but the NATO announcement has not yet made clear whether the supplied version will use the Global 6000 or the Global 6500.
This deal is therefore not just a change of aircraft, but a sign that Europe and Canada are playing a greater role in the NATO Joint Munitions Program.
