🛡️ U.S. successfully tests MRIC, fills air shield in Pacific

U.S. Marines fire a Medium-Range Intercept Capability Air Defense System, or MRIC, successfully extracting an aerial target on June 30, 2026, at Guam, during Valiant Shield 2026 training.

🚀 MRIC was developed to plug the gap between the Stinger portable missile, which has a short range, and a long range defense system like Patriot, allowing Marine units to have their own medium range defense systems for temporary flying bases, refueling points, and forward operating areas.

The system combines an AN / TPS-80 G / ATOR radar, a CAC2S command system, and technology from the Iron Dome using a Tamir extraction rocket, also named in the U.S. as SkyHunter, not a Navy-modified ESSM missile, according to some reports.

🎯 The main task is to deal with cruise missiles, including aircraft and drones. However, recent tests only confirm the extraction of "aerial targets," with official sources not identifying them as drone tests.

MRIC mobility allows moving shields along with troops, fits strategic distribution of operating bases along islands in the Indo-Pacific.
