United States opens up to $500 million in contracts, accelerates the construction of AI systems, handles drones around military bases.
The United States Army awarded AeroVironment a three-year contract to provide anti-drone systems for the Domestic Shield project, with a cap frame of $500 million, and scheduled to end in June 2029.
⚠️, but the $500 million figure is the ceiling of on-demand-order contracts. It does not mean that the government paid the entire amount immediately.
The first batch of orders revealed amounted to $80.5 million, for Titan MS systems and related technologies to complement the base protection of Air Force Global Strike Command.
Titan MS uses AI and Machine Learning, combining data from multiple types of sensors to help detect, classify, track, and handle drones, both radio-controlled and automatic versions, with equipment in the kit possibly consisting of a signal detection system, an Electro-Optical / Infrared camera, and an anti-drone radar. 🤖
However, AI is not a magic weapon that single-handedly stops all drones. The base defense system also requires multi-layer operation, welding electronic warfare sensors and other extraction methods to cope with multiple targets simultaneously.
This investment reflects that low-priced drones and swarms of drones are changing the stability equation, because modern military bases are not just wary of aircraft or missiles, but also looking for small aircraft that may fly in all directions.
