Selling AI Receptionist Agents To Local Businesses

Local businesses lose money daily from missed calls and no-shows. Here’s how I build and sell a 24/7 AI receptionist using ChatGPT — and charge $200–$500+ for setup and monthly hosting.

All steps & prompts below

⤷ Step 1: Identify Businesses That Need an AI Voice Agent

Target service businesses that rely on phone calls or bookings — think salons, HVAC, plumbers, auto shops, med spas.

⤷ Prompt:

Act as a local business researcher and data analyst.

Search for small-to-medium service businesses in [your city] in niches like HVAC, cleaning, dental, salons, plumbing, pet grooming.

For each business, collect:

- Business Name

- Website URL (if available)

- Phone Number

- Email (if available)

- Address

- Industry / Category

- Google Rating

- Notes (e.g., “No booking system”, “Outdated website”, “Facebook only”)

Focus on businesses without modern websites or booking.

Return a CSV/Excel-style table with at least 10 leads.

Label the file: [City]_AI_Receptionist_Leads.xlsx

⤷ Step 2: Build the Custom GPT Agent

Use ChatGPT’s “Create a GPT” feature to design an AI receptionist that acts like a real assistant.

⤷ Prompt:

You are an AI receptionist for a [type of business] in [City].

Greet the caller, ask for:

1. Name

2. Reason for calling

3. Preferred time

4. Phone/email

Politely end with: “Thanks! We'll follow up shortly to confirm.”

Do NOT confirm anything yourself — just collect details.

At the end, summarize:

- Name

- Service Needed

- Time

- Contact Info

⤷ Step 3: Offer Setup & Hosting to Local Biz

Package your service as a high-value “AI receptionist solution.”

⤷ Prompt:

Write a pitch for a local [business type] explaining how an AI receptionist can:

- Save time

- Recover missed leads

- Improve customer satisfaction

- Run 24/7 for a fraction of the cost

💵 Price:

• $200–$500 for setup

• $50–$99/mo for hosting + maintenance

• Upsell: voice call routing, SMS alerts, etc.

👍Pros :

Record a quick demo of the agent in action and send it to business owners. A simple screen recording of the GPT working can close clients fast.

... Read moreAs I've been diving deeper into the world of AI receptionists, one specific type of local business really caught my eye: pet supply stores! You might not think of them first, but they actually have a huge need for 24/7 customer service. Based on my experience, I've found that tailoring your AI receptionist solution to their unique challenges can be incredibly effective and profitable. Think about it – pet store owners are often busy helping customers, feeding animals, or managing inventory. They get tons of calls about product availability (Do you have that special grain-free food?), grooming appointments, adoption inquiries, store hours, or even just general pet care advice. Every missed call could mean a lost sale or a frustrated customer. That's where a custom AI receptionist becomes a lifesaver for them, and a great opportunity for you to make money creating custom voice agents. So, how do you make an AI receptionist specifically shine for a pet supply store? It's all about customizing that GPT! When I'm building a custom GPT for a pet store, I focus on specific prompts that handle their common queries. Instead of just general booking, I'd instruct the AI to ask: "Welcome to Paws & Purrs Pet Supply! Are you calling about a specific product, grooming services, or do you have a general question?" If it's grooming, the AI can then ask for the type of pet and preferred date, collecting all necessary details before a human even needs to step in. This level of detail ensures the AI voice receptionist acts like a true, knowledgeable team member. My initial steps outlined how to identify businesses and build the agent, but for pet stores, I emphasize researching their specific offerings. Do they have a vet clinic attached? Offer puppy training classes? Knowing these details helps you configure the AI to answer precisely. The OCR content mentioned 'creating a Custom GPT in ChatGPT' and this is where you customize the AI's knowledge base to be a pet expert. You can even feed it their product catalog or service list! This means when a customer calls asking if they stock 'Whiskers & Wags organic catnip,' the AI can actually check and respond. When it comes to pitching this to a pet store owner, I always highlight the immediate benefits they'll see. Imagine never missing a call from a customer looking for a specific, high-value product. Picture their staff being less interrupted, allowing them to focus on in-store customers and animal care. The AI can handle repetitive FAQs, allowing the human team to tackle more complex customer service issues. I record a quick demo showing the AI handling a few common pet store scenarios—like booking a dog wash or confirming store hours—which truly helps close the deal. Offering setup of agent and monthly hosting for a service that literally pays for itself in recovered sales is an easy sell. It's not just about saving time; it's about boosting their bottom line and improving the customer experience, making their business more efficient and profitable. That’s why selling AI receptionists, especially to niche markets like pet supply stores, is such a smart move!

How do I get paid as a receptionist?
As a receptionist you don’t generally make a lot of money compared to some other jobs. I make $16 an hour + $2 for every car thats sold at the dealership. If I wasn’t getting that $2 commission I’d probably ask for a $1-2 dollar raise. I work 40 hours a week so my regular pay is $640 a week pre tax
