... Read moreWhen I first started my wellness journey, I thought it was all about strict diets and endless gym sessions. But as I've learned, and especially as I see friends and family navigating different life stages, the mindset truly makes all the difference. Sometimes, we get caught up in what an 'average' body should look like at a certain age, like seeing images of an 'average 70 year old woman body' and wondering if we measure up. But honestly, what even is average? And more importantly, does it serve our health goals or just feed into comparison? One of the biggest lessons I've embraced, which resonates so much with the mindset tips shared earlier, is that 'comparison is the thief of joy.' This becomes even more vital as we age. Our bodies naturally change, and trying to hold onto a 'day 1' body when we're on 'day 1000' (or day 25,550 for our 70-year-old selves!) is just setting ourselves up for frustration. Instead of focusing on some mythical 'average 70 year old woman body,' I've found it's far more empowering to concentrate on my personal best and what makes me feel strong and vibrant. The idea that 'any movement is better than no movement at all' takes on such deep meaning as the years go by. It's not about being a 'gymgirl' or pushing for super intense workouts if that's not where you are. It could be a brisk walk, gardening, gentle yoga, or even just stretching daily. These 'intentional choices for long-term change' are key for maintaining mobility, energy, and overall well-being, especially when you're looking at health goals for the long haul. My aunt, who's in her late 60s, swears by her daily walks and light resistance band exercises – she says it's her non-negotiable for feeling good. It reminds me that consistency, no matter how small the action, truly compounds. And let's talk about 'it's okay to indulge.' This isn't just about enjoying a special treat like chocolate chip cookies. It's about cultivating a balanced relationship with food and life. The 'all or nothing mindset' can be incredibly damaging. For older women, nutritional needs might shift, and focusing on joy and nourishment, rather than deprivation, is crucial. Following an '80/20 rule' or finding what works for your body means you can enjoy food without guilt, avoiding cycles of restriction and overeating that are exhausting at any age, and preventing binge eating tendencies. Ultimately, whether you're 20 or 70, a positive mindset is the foundation for a healthy life. It’s about accepting where you are, celebrating every small victory, and making choices that genuinely support your well-being. Don't let societal expectations or the idea of an 'average' body dictate your happiness or health journey. Focus on what makes you feel good, inside and out. It's truly a journey of self-love and self-care, and those mindset shifts are your most powerful tools.
