My Son’s First Words
Oh my goodness, hearing my son utter his first words was an absolute dream come true! As a new parent, you spend so much time wondering and waiting for those precious milestones, and 'when do babies say their first word?' is definitely one of the biggest questions. For us, it felt like forever, but then one day, out it popped! Every baby is different, of course, but generally, you can expect little ones to start babbling around 6-9 months, and then their true first words often appear between 10 to 18 months. My little guy was right around the 14-month mark, and let me tell you, the joy was immense! It's so exciting to watch their language development unfold. I remember feeling a bit anxious at times, wondering if I was doing enough to encourage him. What really helped us was just talking to him constantly, narrating everything we did, and reading aloud daily. Even simple things like pointing to a 'ball' or saying 'doggy' when we saw one made a huge difference. Responsive parenting, where you acknowledge their babbles and attempts to communicate, really builds their confidence. One of my favorite tools was a good 'baby first words book'. We had a few different ones – some with bright pictures of everyday objects, others with textures for him to touch. These books were fantastic for introducing new vocabulary in a fun, interactive way. We'd sit together, point to the pictures, and I'd say the words clearly. He loved the ones with animal sounds too! It wasn't just about learning words, but also about the bonding time we shared. Don't worry if your baby isn't hitting specific timelines exactly. Each child develops at their own pace. If you have concerns, always chat with your pediatrician about speech and language development. But mostly, enjoy the journey! Soon enough, they'll be stringing two words together, then sentences, and you'll look back at those first precious sounds with such fondness.
