When to use sunscreen

2024/7/15 Edited to

... Read moreHey skincare fam! I used to be so confused about 'When should I use sunscreen?' and honestly, for the longest time, I thought it was just for beach days. Boy, was I wrong! I've learned so much from my dermatologist and through my own journey about how crucial SPF is, not just for preventing sunburn, but for so much more. First off, let's talk about the true importance of sunscreen. It's not just about avoiding that painful burn; it's a powerful tool for maintaining long-term skin health. Regular, daily use of sunscreen is your best weapon against premature aging – think fine lines, wrinkles, and those pesky dark spots caused by sun exposure. More importantly, it drastically reduces your risk of skin cancer. Seriously, even on cloudy days or when you're just sitting by a window, harmful UV rays can reach your skin. So, thinking 'I don't need it today' is a myth I personally busted for myself! Now, for the big question: 'When should you put sunscreen on in your skincare routine?' This is where I see a lot of people get confused. Personally, I found the best place for it is as the very last step in your morning skincare routine, right after your moisturizer and before any makeup. You want to give your other products a chance to absorb fully, and then create that protective barrier with your SPF. I always try to apply it at least 15-20 minutes before I head out the door so it has time to settle in and start working effectively. And don't forget reapplication! This is super important, especially if you're spending extended time outdoors. I make sure to reapply my sunscreen every two hours, or even more frequently if I'm swimming or sweating a lot. This ensures continuous protection throughout the day. I've heard some people struggle with reapplying over makeup, but there are some great SPF mists and powders out there that make it a breeze. Using enough product is also key. A good rule of thumb I follow is the 'two-finger rule' – squeeze a line of sunscreen onto your index and middle fingers, and that's usually enough for your face and neck. And please, don't forget areas like your ears, the back of your neck, and your hands – they get just as much sun exposure! Making sunscreen a non-negotiable part of my daily routine has truly transformed my skin. It feels healthier, looks more even, and I have peace of mind knowing I'm doing my best to protect it. So, next time you're wondering 'When should I use sunscreen?', remember: every single day, as the last step before makeup, and reapply often!
