When In Rome
Italy with the family ❤️
After our initial trip, I realized there's so much more to share about making an Italian family vacation truly special! Especially when you're looking for places that will captivate both adults and children alike. Here are a few more insights from our unforgettable journey, focusing on kid-friendly discoveries and authentic local experiences. One of the biggest hits for our kids was exploring the Roman Forum. It’s not just a collection of old rocks; it's an incredible open-air museum where history comes alive! We loved imagining gladiators at the Colosseum, then walking through the sprawling Forum, picturing senators and citizens going about their daily lives. We even made a game out of spotting different architectural details and imagining what each ruin once was. It truly felt like stepping onto a giant historical movie set – a real 'show' of ancient Rome! Beyond the Forum, the Pantheon’s massive dome left them in awe, and tossing coins into the Trevi Fountain was a magical moment for everyone. For a break from the ancient ruins, we spent an afternoon renting bikes and exploring the Borghese Gardens, which was a perfect way to let the kids burn off some energy amidst beautiful statues and greenery. If you're staying in Rome for a bit longer, I highly recommend a day trip to Ostia Antica. It's often overlooked compared to Pompeii, but it's much closer to Rome and incredibly well-preserved. Our kids absolutely loved exploring this ancient port city. You can walk through old bakeries, public baths, and even apartment buildings, getting a real sense of daily Roman life. It's less crowded than the central Roman sites, allowing the children more freedom to run around and explore safely. It truly feels like walking through a ghost town of ancient Rome, which was super exciting for them! While in Ostia Antica, or even back in Rome, don't miss the chance to experience true local life. Forget the tourist traps! We made it a point to seek out small, family-run trattorias where the pasta is handmade and the atmosphere is buzzing with Italian chatter. This is where you really get a taste of the authentic, unpretentious local vibe. We often just pointed at what looked good or asked for the daily special, and every meal was an adventure. Finding these hidden gems, whether for a quick pizza or a leisurely dinner, became a highlight of our trip. It taught us that the real 'show' of Italy isn't just in its grand monuments but in its everyday life and incredible food. Italy with family is an experience unlike any other. By blending iconic landmarks with off-the-beaten-path discoveries, you create memories that will last a lifetime. Happy travels!
