Are you doing right by your new puppy?

If you got a new puppy for Christmas, you are in a CRUCIAL stage of their development. Experts say that between 3 and 14 weeks is a critical period for the socialization of young puppies.

What is socialization?

When we make reference to socializing dogs, we mean getting them out and exposing them to all types of environments, noises, people, animals, etc.

Why is socialization important?

When puppies are socialized appropriately at a young age, it is shown to decrease chances of reactivity as they grow up, builds their confidence and neutrality in various situations, as well as cutting down on fearfulness.

How do I appropriately socialize my new puppy?

There are a couple things to keep in mind when socializing your young pup:

(1) Be aware that your puppy is not fully vaccinated and is susceptible to diseases within the environment. Avoid letting them make contact with dogs with whom you are not familiar and avoid letting them touch public surfaces where disease could reside.

(2) We ALWAYS want to ensure that our puppy’s interactions are positive and a learning opportunity. This means avoid situations where your puppy could be attacked, harmed, or develop negative feelings and behaviors. If they are scared of something, let them investigate and observe but do not let them run from the situation as this will create a dog who flees from situations in which it is unsure (resulting in anxiety, fear, and lack of confidence)

(3) We suggest carrying your puppy (or if they are too large, a wagon would suffice) to avoid potential exposure to diseases. This also gives them the opportunity to focus outward on the environment rather than fixating on you and obedience. Expose them to all varieties of situation: places they may visit as the grow, all variety of animals, interactions with people, loud noises and chaotic environments, and so on.

If you need help appropriately socializing your new puppy, reach out and we are happy to help set you and your new canine companion up for success!

... Read moreWhile the main article shares incredible insights into early puppy socialization, I know many of us encounter different situations. What if your puppy is a bit older, or perhaps already showing signs of reactivity? Or maybe you have a tiny 'small puppy' that needs extra special care during their adventures? Don't worry, there are still ways to help your furry friend thrive! If you're wondering 'how to socialize a reactive dog,' it's important to understand that socializing an already reactive dog requires a different approach than preventing reactivity in a young puppy. It's less about broad exposure and more about controlled, positive experiences to change their emotional response. I've learned that patience is key here. For dogs that bark or lunge at triggers (like other dogs or people), the goal isn't to force interaction. Instead, try 'parallel walking' at a safe distance, rewarding calm behavior. Desensitization (gradually exposing them to triggers at a low intensity) and counter-conditioning (associating the trigger with something positive, like treats) are powerful tools. I always recommend working with a certified professional dog trainer or behaviorist for reactive dogs, as they can provide tailored guidance and ensure safety for everyone involved. It's a journey, but seeing a reactive dog slowly gain confidence is incredibly rewarding. Then there are our 'small puppies'! They might look adorable and fragile, but they still need robust socialization. However, their small size often means they can be easily overwhelmed or even accidentally injured by larger dogs or boisterous environments. I've found it's crucial to be their advocate. When introducing them to other dogs, ensure the other dog is calm, gentle, and appropriate in size. Carrying your little one in public, just like the pictures show a woman holding a small black and white puppy in an office or a person with a puppy in a retail store, is a fantastic way to expose them to sights, sounds, and smells without putting them at risk on the ground. A wagon works wonders too! This way, they observe the world from a safe vantage point, building confidence without fear. Creating a safe 'den' or crate for them to retreat to at home also gives them a sense of security when things get too busy. And for those with specific mixes, like a 'Cocker cruzado' (Cocker Spaniel mix), knowing a bit about their potential breed traits can really help. Cocker Spaniels, for instance, are often known for being sensitive and can sometimes be prone to anxiety or fear if not consistently and positively socialized. This means gentle handling, positive reinforcement, and avoiding harsh corrections are even more critical. If you have a sensitive small puppy, focus on making every new experience overwhelmingly positive with lots of treats and praise. Understanding your dog's inherent personality, combined with these socialization techniques, will help them grow into a truly confident and well-adjusted companion, no matter their size or background.
