Things That Make Me Feel Like Me Again: Reading 📚

Reading used to be my favorite escape.

Then somewhere between working long hours, constantly feeling stressed, and trying to keep up with life…even opening a book felt like another task on my to-do list.

I’d read the same page five times.

I’d lose focus.

I’d stop picking up my Kindle altogether.

Now?

I’m finally reading because I want to.

I get excited to disappear into fantasy worlds, meet new characters, and spend an hour doing absolutely nothing productive.

It’s funny how healing isn’t always about adding something new.

Sometimes it’s getting back to the version of yourself you missed the most.

📚 This is another thing that’s making me feel like me again.

... Read moreReading used to be my sweetest escape, a portal into different worlds where imagination knew no bounds. Yet, like many, I fell into the trap of stress and overwhelming schedules, turning my cherished pastime into a chore. I remember sitting down with my Kindle, determined to relax, only to find myself re-reading the same page repeatedly, struggling to focus. What helped me reclaim this joy was shifting my mindset from obligation to desire. Instead of forcing myself to read only when I had spare time, I made it a deliberate treat—a moment carved out just for myself. This shift helped me reconnect with the delight of discovering new characters and settings, particularly in fantasy books. Titles like "Warrior Fae" by Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti became more than stories; they were a gateway to self-healing and stress relief. In my experience, reading without pressure meant letting go of unrealistic expectations. I stopped worrying about finishing books quickly or keeping up with reading trends on platforms like #BookTok. Instead, I focused on what felt good, even if that meant spending an hour doing nothing productive but enjoying my book. This journey taught me that healing isn’t always about adding new habits but sometimes about rediscovering lost parts of yourself. For anyone feeling overwhelmed or disconnected, I suggest starting small: pick a genre that excites you, set aside just 10 minutes a day, and allow yourself to get lost in a story. Over time, this simple practice can renew your sense of self and provide a peaceful escape from life’s demands. So if you’ve lost your reading spark, remember it’s okay. The magic lies in returning at your own pace and rediscovering why reading made you feel ‘like you’ in the first place. It’s a beautiful step towards becoming yourself again.
