Your Resume Isn’t a Job Description 👀

If your resume is basically a copy-and-paste of your job description, we need to fix that. 👀

Recruiters don’t just want to know what you were responsible for—we want to understand the impact you made while you were there.

What improved? What changed? What did you build, solve, save, increase, decrease, lead or accomplish?

Your experience tells me what you’ve done.

Your impact tells me why I should interview you.

This week, pull up your resume and look at your bullets with fresh eyes: are you listing responsibilities or demonstrating value?

Next Career Thursday, we’ll actually rewrite one using a simple framework you can use throughout your entire resume. 💼

I’m also turning these exercises into a downloadable Resume Toolkit. Comment RESUME if you want to know when it’s available!

... Read moreWhen I first started refining my resume, I used to list my job responsibilities exactly as my job descriptions stated—thinking that showed recruiters what I did. But I quickly learned that recruiters want to see outcomes and achievements, not just duties. For example, instead of writing "responsible for managing customer service," I transformed it into "improved customer satisfaction scores by 20% through team training and process enhancements." This small change in framing dramatically shifted how interviewers perceived my value. They saw me as a candidate who drove results, not someone who just fulfilled tasks. I've also found that using specific numbers and concrete results makes your impact much clearer. For instance, stating "reduced average time to fill open positions by 15 days by redesigning recruiting processes and strengthening hiring manager partnerships" speaks volumes compared to just "recruiting and hiring." You can start this transformation by closely examining your current resume bullets and asking yourself: does this line tell what I achieved or just what I was supposed to do? If it’s the latter, think about the changes you influenced, the challenges you overcame, or the processes you improved. This mindset does take some practice, but it pays off. Sharing my experience, those who switch to impact-driven resumes tend to get more callbacks and interviews. Plus, it gives you a confidence boost when you can articulate why your experience truly matters. As you prepare for the upcoming Career Thursday where a rewriting framework will be introduced, I suggest creating a list of your responsibilities and then brainstorming the concrete impacts you made. This proactive approach will help you hit the ground running with your resume toolkit and embrace the value-added approach to job applications. In short, your resume isn’t just a job description—it's your story of success, growth, and contributions that recruiters want to hear about.
