Wolf Totem

By: Jiang Rong

“The Freedom or death species”. In Mongolian Nomad culture wolves were believed to be sent down to Earth from the heavens to protect the grasslands. Upon their death, they would fly back Tengger, the God/heaven of the Mongolian nomads (it also just means Sky). Upon the nomads death, it is an honor for their body to be taken south and left for the wolves to feast on their flesh. This way they would get to Tenggar faster.

The book focuses on a Han Chinese student, Chen Zhen, who lives with the Mongolian Nomads during the cultural revolution. The Chinese student was there to advance production, but he soon gets attached to the fascination of wolves. One reason why Han Chinese could never conquer Mongolia was because their strategic maneuvers they learned from wolves. Genghis Khan was an honorable mention. Through Chen’s romanticization of the wolves he looks to steal and raise a cub. Because of Chen’s mistakes and the Mongolian nomads we learn a lot from this liberating species.

This book is a 10/10 for me. The writing is phenomenal and pushes towards thinking of the ecology of the land before industrialization. A mistake that is continued without thinking of the repercussions it has to the Earth ecosystem as a whole. Thank you. I hope you read it and enjoy.

The narrative centers around Chen Zhen, a Han Chinese student, whose journey reveals how wolves embody freedom and resilience. As he integrates into nomadic life, Chen learns from both the wolves and the traditions of the people, highlighting the wisdom in their symbiotic existence. The book is not just a story about man and animal; it serves as a poignant reflection on ecological balance and the impact of industrialization on nature. Readers are reminded of the importance of protecting natural ecosystems and understanding the cultural significance of wildlife, especially in the context of rapid modernization. 'Wolf Totem' encourages a deeper appreciation for the delicate interconnectedness of life. Each page is filled with rich imagery and philosophical musings that challenge readers to reconsider their relationship with the environment. Don't miss out on this thought-provoking book that resonates with the themes of conservation and cultural preservation.
