Women Who Run With the Wolves

By: Clarissa Pinkola Estés, Ph.D.

Reading the last few pages of this book reminded me of how much love was put into it. There was a lot to grab and understand from every page that I had to take long breaks in-between to finish in 2 years time. The last 20 pages I didn’t touch since mid 2021. It all pushed me back to La Que Sabe, The One Who Knows, to remind me of all the miracles women are. Within western culture, women are restricted into roles that are only seen as valuable in through a patriarchal lense but not through the eyes of women themselves. Fortunately, this book illustrates the unstoppable force of the wild woman through all the myths and tales and the undoubtable truth that women will be free to live in their wild state no matter what tries to prevent them. Not to say wild as uncivilized, but as intuitive, wise, magical, and so much more.

Throughout the book each chapter tells an old story from the ancients and breaks it down to patterns of wisdom from the women’s psyche. One idea I really enjoyed is the trinity of one whole. Usually people can break things down into 2 : black or white, sun and moon. But really there is 3! Sun, moon and Earth. Mother father and child. Soul, ego and self. The author talks a lot about the soul ego and self which I also enjoyed.

This book had a lot to say, so much so that I’m already reading it again. I hope one day to remember these myths and stories and to tell them accurately amongst the fire to share with young minds as a reminder to be free and to never intrude on other peoples freedom. Always respect all women. Your neighbors, your sisters, your tias, your mommas, and the Earth it’s self. A’ho Mitakuye Oyasin!🙏🏼

Would read 10/10.

... Read moreAfter spending two years absorbing the profound wisdom of Clarissa Pinkola Estés's 'Women Who Run With the Wolves,' I felt compelled to share more about why this book is an absolute treasure, especially for those curious about its depth beyond just a quick review. It's truly a book that keeps giving, revealing new layers with each read. Many wonder about the genre of 'Women Who Run With the Wolves.' It's not your typical novel or self-help guide, though it has elements of both. I'd describe it as a unique blend of Jungian psychology, mythology, folklore, and feminist spirituality. Dr. Estés, as a Jungian analyst and cantadora (keeper of the old stories), weaves together ancient tales, myths, and fairy tales from various cultures to dissect and illuminate the 'Wild Woman' archetype. It’s a scholarly work presented in an incredibly accessible and personal way, making complex psychological concepts relatable through timeless stories. It truly feels like a conversation with a wise elder, rather than a dry academic text. Now, for a brief synopsis of what you can expect: the book's core premise is about rediscovering and reclaiming the intuitive, instinctual, and natural self that Dr. Estés calls the 'Wild Woman.' She argues that modern patriarchal society often suppresses this vital essence in women, leading to feelings of inadequacy, loss, and disconnection from our true power. Through stories like 'Bluebeard,' 'La Loba,' and 'The Little Match Girl,' she unearths patterns of the feminine psyche, showing how these ancient narratives provide maps for navigating challenges, healing wounds, and fostering creativity and resilience. For me, reading it felt like an excavation of my own soul, peeling back layers of societal conditioning to find something primal and true underneath. It’s less about being 'wild' in an uncivilized sense and more about being authentic, intuitive, and deeply connected to one’s inner knowing. Speaking of connection, the imagery associated with the book is truly iconic. The black cover featuring an illustration of a woman with a wolf perfectly captures the essence of the 'Wild Woman' archetype – a deep, almost mystical bond between the feminine spirit and primal wisdom. This visual representation often sparks curiosity, making you wonder about the tales within. And for those interested, there are indeed illustrated editions that further enhance the experience, bringing the myths to life visually. It’s no wonder this book became a New York Times bestseller and continues to captivate readers worldwide. What truly struck me, and why I’m already rereading it, is how Dr. Estés, through her deep understanding of the human psyche and her rich storytelling, helps you see yourself and the women around you in a new light. It gives language to feelings and experiences that often go unspoken. This book isn't just a read; it's an experience that encourages introspection, healing, and a profound appreciation for the 'miracles women are,' as my previous review mentioned. It's a call to embrace our full, untamed selves, to listen to our inner wisdom, and to connect deeply with the natural world and our own cycles. It truly is a 10/10 recommendation for anyone looking to embark on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment.
