Entangled Life

By: Merlin Sheldrake

If you a big biology or ecology nerd you’ll love this read. The book breaks down all the components and processes mushrooms go through to live on Earth. From the hypha to mycelium to colonies of mushrooms maneuvering through the soil it will tell you how they coexist, improve, or even use the environment for their own benefit. Some mushrooms even zombify ants to produce spores to zombify more ants. It’s done with such direction and precision one would think the mushrooms would have some type of conscious, but na, it’s all a part of the ecosystem. Merlin had said in the beginning of the book that mycelium is when streams of embodiment rather than streams of consciousness – commingle” (pg. 55). All hyphae are linked and cooperate with one another but also work individually to find the best route to resources. They make it seem so easy, like a flow, as if humans could do the same. I don’t know. Wishful thinking.

They had a lot to share. Queer theory for Lichens, matsutake mushrooms being the first life to emerge after the atomic bomb in Hiroshima, the concept of involution, the list goes on. They mentioned Terrance Mckenna in one chapter to speak about the evolutionary reasoning behind psilocybin and you know it’s weird. It’s just been here way before humans’ existence. Now suddenly, humans are trying to find an explanation. There are some theories, but nothing really concrete.

I think the only criticism I have of this book is that it left me with more questions than answers. It got me thinking though. The last thought it left me with was “Fungi might make mushrooms, but first they must unmake something else”  (Pg225). Foods for thought.

... Read moreAfter finishing 'Entangled Life,' I found myself pondering so many things that Merlin Sheldrake so brilliantly laid out. It's not just a book about mushrooms; it's an invitation to see the world through a completely different lens! What struck me most was how much we underestimate the sheer complexity and intelligence (for lack of a better word) of fungal networks. The book really makes you question our human-centric view of life. For example, the deep dive into mycelium felt like uncovering the Earth's hidden internet. Sheldrake describes how these vast, subterranean networks connect forests, sharing nutrients and information in ways we're only just beginning to grasp. It makes you wonder how much goes on beneath our feet that we're completely oblivious to. Seeing the illustrations of different mycelial types, like the intricate patterns of *Boletus*, *Tricholoma*, and Amanita in the book, really brings home the idea of their diverse internal structures and strategies for survival. It's like each one has its own unique architecture designed for specific environments. And then there are the mind-bending examples, like the fungi that 'zombify' ants. It sounds like science fiction, but it's a real, intricate part of nature's cycle. It highlights how fungi are not just passive decomposers but active manipulators of their environment and other organisms. Similarly, the story of Matsutake mushrooms emerging as one of the first life forms after the atomic bomb in Hiroshima is a powerful testament to their resilience and ability to thrive in extreme conditions, literally rebuilding devastated ecosystems from the ground up. The book also delves into philosophical territory, making you ask: 'Are fungi conscious?' The concept of 'streams of embodiment' rather than 'streams of consciousness' really stuck with me. It suggests a form of collective awareness or distributed intelligence that challenges our conventional understanding of what it means to 'think' or 'be.' It makes you think about our own interconnectedness, or lack thereof, as humans. The discussion on *Lichen*, for instance, as an inter-kingdom collaboration between fungi and algae, showcases a partnership so ancient and effective that it completely redefines competition versus cooperation in evolution. If you're anything like me, you'll finish this book with more questions than answers, but in the best possible way. It's not about providing all the solutions but about opening your mind to the incredible, often invisible, forces that shape our planet. 'Entangled Life' isn't just a read; it's an experience that shifts your perspective on biology, ecology, and what it means to be alive in an interconnected world. Seriously, if you're curious about the hidden wonders of nature, you have to pick this up!
