The Portable Malcolm X Reader

Edited by: Manning Marable and Garrett Felber

Big Ups to my boi Malcolm! He would’ve been 97 if he was still alive today. I finished this book earlier this morning and with the anniversary of his death being today, I’m happy to have known him through these reads, records, speeches, etc. In the eulogy Ossie Davis gave of Malcolm he said, “that what we place in the ground is no more now a man – but a seed,” and I truly believe that.

So many people I’ve met hold him as an inspiration to keep moving forward, including myself. The transformation of his person has always held immense importance to me. I never thought education or reading as important as I do now until I read his autobiography. I’ll probably read again because of this book. There was a lot of information I either didn’t know or forgot from the autobiography. Like one, his probation records said he got really sick after he got a job in the factory. He couldn’t work for months. 2: I never knew that in the last year of his life, he was silenced and banned from the NOI, met and recruited Muhammad Ali into the NOI, established both the OAAU (Organization Of Afro-American Unity) and MMI (Muslim Mosque Inc.) AND made his pilgrimage to Mecca. All in that one year (and 3 months). James Baldwin had a cool essay in here about Malcolm and Martin. That foo writes smoother than the butter. I swear. I blazed through it like I was giving a relaxed speech. Anyways if you doin’ research on the boy this a must have. If you just want to have more information at your disposal to reference back to or to look at like his speeches this is an awesome book to have. I got this book probably like 5 years ago just cuz I really loved the cover, but I’m glad I finally read it. If you’re still reading remember to stand firm and honest like Malcolm did. Have immense love for your people and yourself. Oh ! and Remember to smile. Malcolm always loved to smile :)

... Read moreAfter diving into *The Portable Malcolm X Reader*, I couldn't stop thinking about how profound Malcolm X's journey was, especially his commitment to self-education. It truly resonated with me, especially after seeing those powerful words on the cover: 'A MAN WHO STANDS FOR NOTHING WILL FALL FOR ANYTHING.' It made me reflect on my own values and what I truly stand for. The book, expertly edited by Manning Marable and Garrett Felber, isn't just a collection; it’s a meticulously curated journey through Malcolm's evolving thoughts, speeches, and interviews. What struck me most was how education, and reading in particular, became the cornerstone of his transformation. I remember reading in his autobiography, and this reader reinforces it, that his time in prison, spent in the library, was where he truly awakened. He devoured books on history, philosophy, and religion, teaching himself Latin and improving his vocabulary by copying entire dictionaries. This personal anecdote of mine ties directly into the OCR quote: 'KNOWLEDGE IS POWERFUL' and 'EDUCATION IS THE PASSPORT TO THE FUTURE... FOR THE FUTURE BELONGS TO THOSE WHO PREPARE FOR IT TODAY... MALCOLM X.' It's a stark reminder that true empowerment comes from within, through continuous learning and challenging your own perspectives. The 'Portable' aspect of this reader is brilliant – it’s not just a biography, but a compilation of primary sources allowing you to hear Malcolm in his own words, bridging the gap between his popular image and his complex reality. Marable and Felber did an incredible job selecting key texts that highlight his intellectual growth and ideological shifts, making it accessible even if you're not ready to tackle the full autobiography just yet. For anyone looking for malcolm x reading book recommendations or trying to understand *malcolm x by manning marable*, this collection really hits different. The insights from his tumultuous final year, which the original article touched upon, are absolutely gripping. Imagine, within a span of just 15 months, he was banned from the Nation of Islam, established both the OAAU and MMI, converted to orthodox Islam after his pilgrimage to Mecca, and still managed to recruit Muhammad Ali! This period shows his relentless pursuit of truth and justice, even when ostracized. It truly embodies Ossie Davis’s moving eulogy, echoed in the OCR: 'what we place in the ground is no more now a man – but a seed.' His radical transformation wasn't a static event but a continuous process of learning and adapting, always striving for what he believed was right for his people. Reading his speeches from this period, you can feel the urgency and clarity of his message. This book isn't just for historical research; it’s a blueprint for self-improvement and standing strong in your convictions. It reminds me to cultivate that immense love for my people and myself, just as Malcolm did. And yes, to always remember to smile, because even amidst the struggle, there’s strength and joy to be found. If you've been curious about the portable malcolm x reader or how he evolved, trust me, this book offers an unparalleled window into the mind of a revolutionary whose impact continues to resonate today. It's more than just a historical text; it's a call to action for personal and communal growth.
