ADHD + Organizing = A Whole Different Puzzle

Imagine trying to organize a 1,000-piece puzzle… but every time you find a piece, 10 new puzzles dump onto the table.

That’s what ADHD feels like when I start organizing. I see what needs to be done, I even start, but then my brain gets so overwhelmed by all the steps that it just shuts down.

It’s not laziness. It’s not that I don’t care. It’s my brain getting overloaded. I want things to be organized too. It just takes me longer and in a different way than someone without ADHD.

If this feels like you too, you’re not alone 💛

... Read moreLiving with ADHD means that organizing everyday tasks can become an enormous challenge, often feeling like trying to complete a giant puzzle that keeps multiplying. The constant influx of new pieces—as depicted by the analogy of 1,000-piece puzzles dumping onto the table—captures the overwhelming nature of executive dysfunction that many experience with ADHD. This cognitive overload happens because ADHD affects the brain’s ability to process and prioritize multiple steps at once. When faced with a complex task, such as organizing a room or completing a project, the individual may become paralyzed by the sheer number of subtasks and decisions. It’s important to recognize that this is not due to laziness or lack of care, but rather a neurological difference in how the brain manages information. For those with ADHD, breaking tasks into smaller, manageable chunks can help reduce the feeling of being overwhelmed. Strategies such as using checklists, timers, or setting clear priorities can provide structure and improve focus. Additionally, minimizing distractions and working in short, timed intervals (often called the Pomodoro technique) can make tackling tasks less daunting. Communicating these experiences to others can also foster greater understanding and support. By explaining that task initiation is hindered not by unwillingness but by brain overload, individuals with ADHD can help reduce stigma. The hashtags #adhd, #adhdlife, #adhdtips, #adhdwomen, and #adhdmom indicate communities where people share experiences and tips to manage these challenges effectively. Ultimately, acknowledging the unique ways ADHD affects organization empowers individuals to develop personalized methods that accommodate their neurological wiring, helping them achieve their goals without undue stress.
